Venus OS v3.60~69 available for public testing

Good day!

A fresh new thread to continue testing the v3.60 beta series.

Change log below, first please make yourself aware with the beta testing instructions:

Instructions 1 of 3: Venus OS beta testing & how to join/install

In case you don’t know what this message is about, please start with reading this link, which explains the Venus OS beta program. Venus OS is the software running on all our GX devices, such as the Cerbo GX.

Instructions 2 of 3: How to report an issue?

Before posting, please check if your issue already exists, in which case please contribute by replying to that issue or up-voting it.

Only once you are sure its a new possible issue, start a new topic.

Lastly, before posting, preferably first revert to the latest official release, to double check if the issue you’re seeing was present there as well. Regressions require a different treatment than other issues and bugs. And let us know if you did that, and what the difference is. A perfect report contains:

  • How its expected to work
  • How it doesn’t work as expected
  • Details on the system
  • What you’ve already tried to make sure its not a setting or other issue.

Please take note that that this works quite differently than it used to do on the old version of Community:

  • For a new issue, open a new topic. Instead of adding a new reply at the bottom.
  • To add to an already open issue, aka topic, reply to that. Or just upvote it if you have the same issue. This will help us a lot in determining its importance and manage our priorities.

Instructions 3 of 3: using Node-RED, Kevin’s SetupHelper, GuiMods or other add-ons?

In case you are running Node-RED or SignalK, then please at least say so in your bug report.

Kevin’s GuiMods and other 3rd party add-ons: don’t report your gui issues here. Please do it elsewhere instead; and make sure to check out the related issue tracker first.

Changes made by us can cause a compatibility issue with the GuiMods; and these betas report pages are for official firmware only.

Change log

v3.60~69

General

  • Add new Switch pane. Works with the DC SmartSwitch by Energy Solutions Ltd in the UK, and Switches can be added from within Node-RED. The switch pane:

Configuration is available in the Settings → Device list pages: Later, the built-in relays in a GX will become part of this as well, as most likely other relays.

  • Add feature to backup and restore the configuration of Multis and Quattros (VE.Bus). This allows to (a) replace a failed unit with a new one, without thereafter having to go through full reconfiguration. Restoring the settings will automatically identify the missing/failed and new unit, and configure that accordingly. And (b) to switch between different configurations.

  • Add compatibility with the soon to be launched SmartSwitch by Energy Solutions Ltd. A 4 channel DC switch, connectable via VE.Can. Features 5A per channel, 15A total, 12 and 24V operation possible. For details, register here.

  • Add option to set a Orion XS to be a common DC-DC converter that takes power from the main battery, rather than its default: charging the main battery with (usually) powered by an alternator. Fixes issue where the Orion XS would be controlled by DVCC which could lead to charging with the wrong voltage. The setting for this is on the GX, in the New UI only. See Settings → Device list → Orion XS. It is possible to set it using the New UI and then revert to the Classic UI again. Note that the setting will be reworded and moved a bit, but functionally it is all done. Feedback that it works is welcome!

New UI

  • Fix tank total calculation in case one of the tanks is disconnected / measurement is not available.

  • Fix bug in Custom tank shape point removal. Thank you .. for reporting.

  • Ask user for confirmation before restarting a VE.Bus system, to eliminate accidental system switch-offs.

  • Distinguish between Atlantic Standard and Atlantic Daylight time zone, as well as reword the time zones that where previously available under a menu called Etc. Its now called Other, and at below the list of global regions like Europe, Atlantic, and so forth.

  • Fix missing battery temperature in the Battery list.

  • Various other small improvements and fixes, such showing more details in the Settings → Connectivity menu, saving clicks back and forth to see the actual status.

Venus OS Large / Node-RED

  • Add “virtual switch”. Add switches to the standard GX user interface, program functionality behind that using standard Node-RED; allowing the end-user to for example start flows, or change settings within flows. Similar to what was already possible using the Node-RED dashboard, but then accessible from the main UI and also locally on an Ekrano GX or GX Touch.
To use it, add a node of the type Virtual Device to your flow, available at the bottom of the list in yellow, and then configure it to be of the type “Switch”.
Here are is a screenshot of a small example flow to make in Node-RED:

And the resulting switch pane in the new UI:

v3.60~67 & 68

General

  • Fix GX GSM & GX LTE issues when the mobile network issues an IPv6 address rather than an IPv4 address.

  • Fix ethernet connection details, such as the IP address, not being populated properly. This was broken earlier, during v3.60 beta versions.

  • Add warning that the data partition is nearly full or full. Trigger level is less than 10% free space. This is mostly useful for people using Node-RED, Signal-K, or third-party add-ons. Venus OS is not design to operate with a full data partition, hence this useful warning. For further information see the, new per Venus OS v3.60!, Settings → General → Modification checks menu, its at the bottom of the General menu.

Here is a screenshot of the new page:

  • Fix Venus GX VE.Direct port not working. Broken earlier during the Venus OS v3.60 beta series. Thank you to various people for reporting this!

Venus OS Large / Node-RED

  • Fix issue that prevented installing certain node pallettes, such as the node-red-contrib-socketcan node palette. This was caused by some missing dependencies (filecmp).

v3.60~66

  • Fix VM-3P75CT PV Inverter & EV Charger roles

v3.60~61 till v3.60~65

General

  • Fix VM-3P75CT on LAN connection issues

Venus OS Large / Node-RED

  • Fix issue that prevented logging in to Node-RED after first securing it (by setting GX Security Profile to Secured or Weak) and then setting it back to unsecured.

Developers / under water

  • Update Linux kernel from v5.10.109 to v6.12.23, an up to date LTS version. Includes Cerbo GX MK2 related canbus stability fixes.

v3.60~60

  • Multis & Quattros VE.Bus

    • Clear phase rotation warning when AC input is ignored, unit is switched off or to inverter-only
  • Multi RS & Inverter RS

    • Fix incorrect DC Load numbers on GX UI
    • Add current produced by built-in MPPT to Current summary (visible when users select to see current rather than power on the GUI). Before this change, the DC current coming from the built-in solar trackers wasn’t visible.
  • In the past, the current made by the RS was not shown if you selected the Current view on GUI-v2.

  • Dynamic ESS

    • Fix device selection when having more than one Multi/Quattro system connected to the GX. Now it select the device with the lowest device instance, similarly to how DVCC and other features work.
    • Increase hardcoded 32kW to allow import/export at higher power values

Venus OS Large

  • Victron Node-RED pallette, node-red-contrib-victron v1.6.23 & v1.6.24
    • Virtual switch: improve naming
    • Extra examples
  • Node-RED v3.1.4 & 3.1.5
    • Minor version bumps to sync with latest 3.x release.

v3.60~59

  • Fix Cerbo GX MK2 VE.Can 2 port issues. A while back we’ve already released a an improvement for that issue, but that still left a certain percentage of units failing, with the remedy being to RMA/replace them under warranty. OK - but not good.
Now, we’ve finally been able to, in software, find a fix that promises to be a 100% solution. Also VRM data this morning confirms it: all units that had issues running v3.60~58 yesterday, and now updated to v3.60~59, report a 100% operational VE.Can 2 port. More testing is needed to be 100% sure, but so far all signals and results are promising!
  • Comap genset integration: Fix oil pressure scaling
  • Energy meter VM-3P75CT: future firmware related improvements

Venus OS Large

  • Node-RED Victron pallette, node-red-contrib-victron 1.6.23
    • virtual-switches: add extra paths

v3.60~58

  • Fix bug, introduced in a recent v3.60 beta, that causes some MultiPlus models to turn on by itself.

v3.60~54 till v3.60~57

Fix a few regressions, ie. bugs introduced during earlier v3.60 beta versions:

  • Fix access point feature
  • Fix VictronConnect on local LAN feature (an MQTT error would show).

Multis/Quattros VE.Bus:

  • Clear phase rotation warning when AC input is ignored, inverter is switched off or set to inverter/only.

Multi RS:

  • Improve state shown for systems consisting of multiple units.

New UI:

  • Change how warnings, alarms and other notifications are shown. Previously the display would move away from wherever it was to the notifications page. Which can be quite annoying while diagnosing an intermittent problem. Now it doesn’t change pages, but instead shows a toast/popup while leaving the user on the page where she/he was.
  • Add feature that allows to select individual batteries and tanks for the Brief page center gauges
  • Improve performance of Brief side panel load graph
  • Fix save value when customizing Brief center temperature service
  • Update breadcrumb titles when language changes
  • Show custom name of digital input in device list
  • Fix typos in Arctic and Antarctic time zone names

Genset start/stop

  • Better handle systems having multiple gensets. The start/stop features will work with the genset having the lowest device instance and ignore the others.

Venus OS Large / Node-RED

  • Victron node palette aka node-red-contrib v1.6.22:
    • Add missing temperature types for virtual temp device
    • Add info fields for virtual battery
    • Fix in installing example flows

v3.60~50 till v3.60~53

  • Fix Cerbo MK2 wifi issue. For users that can’t update because they are running a prior beta version where the wifi is too unreliable to install a firmware update, install the update using an SD Card, USB stick or connect an ethernet cable.

Venus OS Large / Node-RED

  • Fix Node-RED dashboard issues

v3.60~49

New UI

  • Fix changing of access level, thank you @pwfarnell for your report
  • Various other small changes
  • Update translations

Classic UI

  • Fix various styling issues
  • Fix issue related to the Atlantic Standard Time and Halifax: the timezone “Atlantic Standard Time (Canada)” has been renamed to Atlantic Daylight Time (Canada). A new time zone, “Atlantic Standard Time”, has been added which does not observe daylight saving time. Users in that timezone must select the new one for the correct time to be displayed the year round. The same change will be made to the New UI soon.

Venus OS Large / Node-RED

  • node-red-contrib-victron 1.6.21
    • Fix relay control node, thank you @AdrianChen for reporting

v3.60~48

  • No changes to the installed image

Developers

  • re-add various opkg installable packages that had been missing since a few beta versions back.

v3.60~47
Dynamic ESS

  • Improve how Dynamic ESS reacts when actual consumption or solar production differs from forecasted. For example when there is more solar then expected, the updated algorithm will in many cases use that extra solar power to charge the battery, even if that would exceed the planned SOC level for the current hour. Instead of feeding that excess solar back into the grid for a low price, to later have to buy it back at a higher price.

Security and other improvements

  • Disable no longer recommended TLS 1, TLS 1.1 and DTS 1 system wide, by defaulting to minimal TLS2 and cyphers as recommended by Mozilla, see Security/Server Side TLS - MozillaWiki.
  • Update the used MQTT broker to FlashMQ v1.20.0

Venus OS Large / Node-RED

  • node-red-contrib-victron 1.6.20
    • Fix in setting initial state for enum values

  • Add support for GUI-v2 on devices that support it
  • Improve layout on High DPI screens (Garmin 9000)
  • Improve support for systems having multiple connected Multis/Quattro’s.

New UI / gui-v2

  • Various fixes and improvements to the recently updated Settings menus.
  • Always show battery SOC percentage or Temperature in Brief center (instead of only when there is one gauge).
  • Move gps devices into the device list
  • Generators: add new “Stop generator on Tank level” condition
  • Display VRM device heartbeat information in splash view
  • Fix being unable to open any settings pages if access level is “User”

  • Show a toast notification when the relay function is changed
  • Clip main view on desktop as well as wasm
  • Fix loading of Device Info page from PageAcInModel
  • Rename zero feed-in limit to dynamic power limit

Energy Meter VM-3P75CT

  • Reduce GX CPU load required when measuring (by only doing high-speed data when used as grid meter). For now only when the meter is connected on VE.Can, the same improvement will be added for when connected on Ethernet soon.

Venus OS Large / Node-RED

  • Victron node palette, aka node-red-contrib-victron, v1.6.17 → v1.16.19. No significant changes.
  • Signal K Server: add the documentation back

Remote VEConfigure

  • Fix VeConfigure cannot open remote file with special firmware versions such as S99 for external transfer switch
  • Fix occasional configuration fails with error 46 (uploaded file does not match model)

New UI aka gui-v2

  • Add solar & wind priority feature
  • Add page to allow checking if a system was modified or not + links to obtain support
  • Brief page: allow setting the center gauge levels to be set to None, which for example makes it possible to see only battery SOC in the center, and have the tanks on the levels page only. Further improvements and configurability of that center gauge is on its way
  • Brief page: show amps instead of power, in case amps is the chosen preference in the settings
  • Various other small improvements and fixes

DVCC

  • Do not force SVS off for BlueNova batteries
Users can now select their own setting, if they prefer to use SVS. Our recommendation remains to leave SVS off.

Genset start/stop

  • Add feature to stop the genset when the tank level is below X; to prevent continuing to run until tank is empty and air is in the system.

Wakespeed speed integration

  • Fix field drive, add utilization and engine RPM via J1939

Hatz DC genset integration

  • various improvements

Venus OS Large

  • node-red-contrib-victron v1.16.16 & v1.6.17:
    • Update of underlying library, reducing dbus traffic for virtual devices
    • Reduce amount of installed files
    • Fix in data type for some paths used by the virtual devices
    • Add null-values support to invalidate dbus paths

Developers / under water

  • update OpenEmbedded from Dunfell version to Scarthgap. Which brings all the underlying used packages and software inside Venus OS up to date. This does come with a slight increase in CPU and RAM usage. Therefore, on already near overloaded devices, especially in case its a CCGX, this might result in a no longer functional and/or continuously rebooting system. Worst case, reduce the load by disconnecting the connected equipment, and revery to Venus OS v3.54.
  • watchdog: increase the max-load5 to 10. The watchdog should only react in completely runaway cases. During boot and with the large image image there can be temporarily quite overloaded cases, which shouldn’t trigger the watchdog early. They ought to settle over time or other wise the load15 will catch them.
  • add htop as optional installable package

v3.60~25

  • Tank inputs on Cerbo GX, Ekrano GX GX Tank 140: Increase margin on analog input open circuit detection, fixes tanks showing an “Open circuit” alarm while all that happened was a sensor that is a bit overshooting / out of range.
  • Login page for gui-v2: fix iOS zoom in on page.
  • Various other small fixes

Developers

  • drop support for qt4 in the SDK, since it is no longer used nor included in Venus OS
    v3.60~22, 23 and 24

ESS

  • fix issue in peakshaving feature in combination with the Self-consumption from battery setting set to Only critical loads
  • fix problem where loads were not powered from PV when ESS mode is optimised with minsoc=100%, unless the battery actually reached 100%. Thanks to @nickdb. (introduced in previous beta version)

Managed batteries:

  • Add support for Soluna batteries

Genset start/stop:

  • genset start/stop: add a new alarm feature “Detect generator at DC”
    • When the setting is enabled, an alarm will be triggered if the DC current read by the genset has not been above 5A once for 300s. As soon as the current has been above 5A once, the genset is considered running properly, until it is stopped again.
    • Only visible for digitally connected DC gensets, such as Fischer Panda and Hatz.
    • Here is a screenshot of the new setting and the new alarm:

Venus OS Large / Signal K server

  • signalk-venus-plugin v1.42 → v1.43

Modifications:

  • gui-v1: Add log entry if loading QML files failed, more specifically gui-v1 now reports to the console if an error occurred during initial parsing. This won’t catch errors in pages which are loaded later on, for example the overviews. But does catch errors in components; and allows add-ons like gui-mods to be more robust/foolproof.

v3.60~21

  • ESS: fix issue where MPPTs stop generating when minimum SOC is set to 100%.
  • DSE Genset start/stop integration: support for more models, including DSE7320 and DSE7320 MKII. We now support all applicable DSE models. The range not support is the DSE8000 range, which is a more advanced range used for paralleling gensets.
  • Remote firmware updates: fix issue where only one VE.Direct device (mppt, battery monitor, smartshunt) was found when scanning; as was as improve the status indication as visible on the VRM Portal

Venus OS Large / Node-RED

    • Fix issue preventing virtual GPS device from functioning
    • Update services: Added several extra paths to the acsystem and acload nodes
    • Make temperature optional for virtual batteries
    • Update dependencies
    • Update documentation
    • Add ability to assign single phase virtual PV inverter to any of L1-L3 phases

  • Small internal change related to Cerbo GX MK2 VE.Can Port 2 status reporting

v3.60~9

  • Change the (per v3.60 newly introduced, see below) PV Inverter limiting behaviour for SMA inverters. The algorithm no longer auto-enables the feature on the SMA inverter, and therefore it is now necessary, if you want to use this feature, enable External limiting via Modbus TCP in the SMA settings. The GX will now not show the limiting option in its settings unless the SMA is configured for External limiting. Fixes error 10120 being raised on the SMA inverter.
  • A few small further improvements to the Cerbo GX MK2 VE.Can port 2 software improvement.
  • New UI: Fix virtual keyboard no longer working - this was broking earlier during v3.60 betas.

v3.60~8

  • Fix Cerbo GX MK2 VE.Can 2 port failing after some time on a certain percentage of units, especially when running the New UI (gui-v2)
  • Fix genset start/stop not working always, bug was introduced earlier during v3.60 development
  • Fix Multi RS grid lost alarm; that alarm mechanism is now configured with the common Settings → System setup → Monitor for grid failure setting.

gui-v2

  • Respect access level in various device list controls
  • Fix generator start/stop conditions battery monitor selection menu
  • Add control card for EV Charger
  • Add support for Utilization reporting for Alternator (visible for those alternator controllers that transmit that data)

  • Victron pallette, node-red-contrib-victron v1.6.3
    • Update enum of inverter mode
    • Bump in underlying libraries
    • Update documentation

v.3.52 → v3.60~4

General:

PV Inverter integration:

  • Re-add the new setting and feature that was also tested in the v3.50 beta series for a while: PV Limiting support for PV-inverters other than Fronius and ABB/Fimer, who were always supported.
  • Note that the setting is only available in gui-v1 at the moment, it will be added to gui-v2 shortly.
  • Details:
    • This setting shows only for PV Inverters other than Fronius and ABB/Fimer. For Fronius and ABB/Fimer nothing changes: PV limiting remains always enabled as in the past.
    • The setting shows up for any PV-inverter that advertises the limiting ability through the SunSpec protocol.
    • The setting also shows up for some SolarEdge inverters. SolarEdge use their own proprietary limiting protocol.
    • This feature will interfere with proper operation in a SolarEdge/SMA system with an energy meter. Leave it disabled in such systems.
    • This setting defaults to Off. The objective is to avoid silently/unexpectedly enable the limiter on a running system when Venus OS is updated.
    • Note that enabling this setting only makes the GX “limiting aware” for the said PV Inverter. Thereafter, to actually enable limiting, either Disable the feed-in of excess AC-coupled PV in Settings → ESS, or use Dynamic ESS.
    • For Fronius and ABB/Fimer, nothing changes. PV-limiting support remains enabled and there is no setting for it.
  • Compared to the version last in v3.50 (v3.50-42):
    • Fix bug that caused support for limiting to not be indicated (introduced in venus 3.50~40)
    • Fix bug that required a reboot after disabling the limiter

New UI aka gui-v2:

  • Show multi-phase solar inverter output in watts not amps
  • Fix bug in Bluetooth sensor configuration menu that could cause sensors to no longer show in a webbrowser until restarting the browser.
  • Update translations.

Multi RS:

  • Fix grid-lost alarm showing even though disabling in Settings → System
  • Add Multi RS specifics to GX genset start/stop feature:
    • Warm-up and Cool-down support (ignore AC input to allow the generator to warm-up or cool-down without a load)
    • Start/stop conditions on Inverter overload, Inverter temperature, AC load
  • Fix various smaller issues

Modbus-TCP:

  • Add register for Multi RS ESS Active SocLimit
    • This is the actual minimum SOC the system is using, it can be different from the Minimum SOC setting if BatteryLife is active
    • register 4926, uint16
  • Add registers for AC input current limits for RS-systems
    • Register 4940: AC input current limit for AC-in-1
    • Register 4941: AC input current limit for AC-in-2 (for future models)
    • Register 4942: AC input current limit at the meter

Managed batteries:

  • Reword high battery voltage alarm into High cell voltage alarm since that better indicates the issue. In 99.999% of situations this indicates an imbalance issue in a battery/bms combination that apparently doesn’t automatically handle this in way while preventing high cell voltage alarms/situations, consult your battery documentation on how to restore cell balance.

Venus OS Large - Node-RED:

  • update victron node pallette to v1.6.2
  • update vrm node
  • update Node-RED from v3.1.10 to v3.1.13

Was dabbling in a Node Red flow when I got the notification of this update.

The change list in the v3.60 betas has been impressive so far (with probably the most intermediate releases since I’ve started following the beta’s, and some bumps in the road as well) and I’m very excited to see the full change log from v3.55 to the final v3.60 stable release.
My gut feeling tells me we’re not that far away from the official release but since I have no view of the v3.60 goals/roadmap, let’s see what other bumps come up between now and then.

Many new features in GUIv2 it seems, with the Virtual Switches and such.
Any chance those will get backported to GUIv1 ?
I’m a big fan of v1 due to it’s very low bandwidth requirements.

As usual: thanks for all the work you’re doing !

Hi @BartChampagne ,

Thanks for asking!

The plan for v3.60 is to release it as soon as possible.

The main priority recently had been to fix the remaining issues with the VE.Can 2 port on the Cerbo GX MK2. Which, fingers crossed, seems to finally have been achieved. Till now its proven to be fully stable, also the solutions involves no work arounds or special retries or resets. For those interested: the change made is to use a quite different speed for the SPI communication, in combination with the newer kernel + various recent extra improvements to the kernel related to SPI communication for exactly the microprocessor used in the Cerbo GX MK2.

I want at least two more weeks of field testing before taking that to an official release.

Aside from that what needs to be done is triage, fix and (field) test the other open regressions and reports. Of which there are not that many but definitively a few.

So… 3 to 6 weeks from now? In a perfect situation maybe 2, but lets see.

If need be, some recently added features will be removed again to allow the official release to proceed.

Good morning @mpvader,

From your comment I’m assuming the VenusOS release cycle somewhat follows the one I know from Debian: approaching the rough release timeframe no new features will be added and remaining time will be dedicated to bug squashing and release testing.
And any non-critical new feature that doesn’t pass testing in due time will be left out of the initial release but will be a candidate for an interim minor update.

Please drop a note with features you’d like to see grilled & tested extra hard when v3.60 enters the final pre-release stage, so the community can focus on stresstesting those
My personal interest are the changes in DESS, I might create a dedicated topic for that.

Variation on a quote from my work in networking:
“Everybody has a testing system. The lucky ones also have a production system.”

Haha indeed!

Wrt release cycle, yes, that is the approach.

Testing priority now is:

  • VE.Can ports need to be 100% stable
  • the new features (switching pane, especially with Node-RED) need to be stable so we don’t have to take it out.
  • VE.Bus settings backup & restore same story.
  • GX GSM, due to recent IPv6 fix.

And then its everything else. Its been quite stable recently. List of issues is getting shorter!

7 posts were split to a new topic: Beta V3.60~69 Virtual switch feedback and loss of settings on reboot

Also found the boat page, not listed in the changelog, its like a PC game where there are hidden treasures for the player to find.

Had to move my Lab MK2 to a non-CAN system (bummer) but will see if I can use it to test the switching pane and backup/restore.
Another (production) MK2 has Pytes batteries on CAN2 so that’s a candidate.
That one is Wifi connected though, so will need to make sure I don’t cut off my access to revert if need be.
Don’t have a GX GSM and probably on regular VenusOS IPv6 isn’t an issue that needs testing ?

Maybe a gimmick for a future release: if the new version doesn’t get connected & confirmed within $timeframe, revert & reboot back to the previous version ?
