We have been using Smartsolar MPPT 75|15 controllers in a number of our smaller electronic signs. After a design change on the signs we have been experiencing startup issues with the Victron controller. After connecting the battery and with no solar input the Victron controller pulses the output to the load but will not supply power continuously. If I start the Victron controller first and wait a few seconds for the unit to switch on the output and then connect my load it will work 100% each time. My suspicion is that due to the addition of several buck convertor power supplies on the LED display panels the capacitors in the input are fooling the over current detection circuits of the Victron controller during the startup cycle. The current drawn by the sign is normally in the range of 0.25A to 2A so is well within the capacity of the Victron controller. Has anyone previously experienced this behaviour and been able to implement a successful fix.
As ever, the manual has the information. It includes a warning against high start up current devices and the solution to wire them to the battery and use the load output to drive a battery protect, but a relay or SSR could be used
