SmartSolar MPPT 250/100 – 52-55V at MPPT PV input at night

Hello,

I would particularly appreciate a technical response from Victron regarding the following behavior of my charge controller. I would like to know whether this is normal operation or a fault that should be addressed under warranty.

I have four Victron SmartSolar charge controllers installed:

  • 3× MPPT 250/85 – in operation for approximately 1 year
  • 1× MPPT 250/100 – in operation for approximately 6 months

All four controllers are running on firmware version 3.18 and are connected via VE.Can.

I have problem only with the MPPT 250/100.

During the day, the controller operates normally and charges the battery as expected. However, at night, it shows approximately 52 V - 55V at the PV input, even in complete darkness.

This voltage is approximately equal to the actual battery voltage.

The other three MPPT 250/85 controllers show approximately 0–1 V at their PV inputs under the same conditions.

The MPPT 250/100 reports no errors.

What I have tested:

  1. I verified the approximately 52-55 V at the PV input using a multimeter. Therefore, this is not just an incorrect reading in VRM.
  2. I disconnected the solar panels from the MPPT 250/100 using the DC isolator. The voltage at the PV input remained at approximately 52-55 V, even with the panels disconnected.
  3. I then disconnected the controller from the battery for maybe 30seconds. The voltage at the PV input disappeared.
  4. After reconnecting the battery, approximately 52-55 V appeared at the PV input again. Restarting the controller did not resolve the issue.

PV array connected to the MPPT 250/100:

  • 8× panels 4s2p, 3760Wp, 48V battery system

My questions, particularly for the Victron technical team:

  1. Is this behavior normal for the MPPT 250/100, or is it a known symptom of a hardware fault?
  2. Could this be caused by a damaged power MOSFET or another internal component?
  3. Is it safe?

It is normal behavior or i need for warranty claim?

Thank you for your response.

What PV module data do you have?

It’s entirely possible that the reverse-current protection has been damaged.

i have this panels

Measure your array to check whether perhaps more than 4 modules have been connected in series.

There shouldn’t normally be any reverse current flowing into the module at night. Download the RMA form and work through the tests.

My PV array is indeed configured as 4S2P. The current operating voltage, according to VRM, is 135 V. Sometimes it reaches around 160 V.
