I bought a small 5” hdmi screen to show the new GUI from Venus OS. Venus OS itself is running on a Raspberry 3B quite well. But I would like to show the dashboard “permanently” on a screen. Energy consumption (or reducing it) is quite important as it is a off-grid system on a boat.
My idea is: Raspberry Pi Zero 2 runs a tiny linux with a webbrowser that shows only the Venus OS website in kiosk mode.
Are there any experiences with that? Is it enough?
Th Pi3 only takes about 3.5W, so this is not a real concern. You likely have other standing loads that are much higher than that. The screen backlight also takes a few watts, so make sure that this times out too.
I’ve never tried a screen on a Zero 2 W but I’ve had Venus OS large running on one with 3 MPPTs connected to it OK so maybe you could use the 3B for the remote browser if the Zero 2 W isn’t fast enough.
Alternatively, have you seen you can use an Android device for the screen?
I’m using a Amazon Fire 8HD tablet I got for about £40 for a remote display.
The idea to change RPi3 and the Zero is quite nice. I would have not expected that venus os is running smoothly on that small tiny thing .
Have you tried the new Venus Gui-v2 or the v1 on the Zero 2 W? Do you know if there are still unused ressources or if the Zero 2 W is really under fire?
