Problem involving Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A (360W) Non-isolated DC-DC Charger

My Service battery on my boat doesnt seem to want to charge up on the alternator, with the engine running.

When I start the engine, the Input voltage increases to about 14v and the charger turns on. At this point the Input Voltage drops back to about 9V, and the charger turns off.

Im also seeing the notorious ‘Remote Input Inactive’ message, but I’m assuming that’s because the input voltage is only high enough for a brief moment.

The Orion Charger is connected to the service battery in parallel to the start battery..

Any Ideas?

One cause of this is you have developed a poor connection on the input positive or negative wiring to the Orion, loose terminal, ground connection, failing fuse, breaker or isolator. There is enough connection to read a voltage before the Orion starts because there is no current flow, so no voltage drop. Onve the Orion tries to start up and draw power, the current flow csuses voltage drop. The Orion stops, current flow stops, the Orion restarts. The cycle keeps repeating. Classic issue, many posts on here about this.

That could be it, but it’s not ‘to’ the Orion. I checked and corrected one issue here. Maybe on the service battery. I will check this tomorrow.

Dave Martin.

Thanks!
