Orion XS Bi-Directional

I read on the old community site that the Orion XS hardware is Bi-Directional.

How good would it be if Victron can come up with a firmware to make this possible.

  • Let excess solar go to the Start Battery
  • Charge Start Battery because it’s Flat

Redarc has brought out the Alpha range and those 2 features me and many others I’ve spoken to would love to see from Victron.
I higher IP Rating would be nice, but not as important as the above IMO.

How many people would be interested in these features?

Recently discussed once again in the thread below. Victron have this on their radar and have their priorities.

I currently use an older Ctek D250S for a dual battery setup in a 4x4. It does 20A DC-DC and also has a 20A MPPT charger built in. It can charge the starter battery once the house battery is fully charged on solar. Useful feature. This setup has been very reliable but has limitations :

  • there is no Lithium-ion charging profile in the D250S
  • the solar voltage input to the MPPT is a bit limiting at 25V max.
  • I need more than 20A DC-DC charging capacity

Planning to change to Victron (Smart Solar 100/20 and Orion XS) when I replace my AGM house battery with a LiFePO4 in future. Having the ability to charge the starter battery using excess solar power would be very useful in remote locations. This would be a good selling point for the Orion XS if it can be achieved by a firmware update.

From a pragmatically point of view, how can one believe this could be on the list of priorities, when buying another one for use in the other direction it’s a more appealing option for the manufacturer from economical point of view?
Probably just a competition move on this direction would put this upper on the todo list…

That is true, but this solution is a selling point.

To use another unit to go the other direction isn’t as simple as that.
You’ll need to throw some relays in otherwise you’ll have the start battery charge the auxiliary which will then charge the start again and so on.

Still betting against it happening.

The xs is absolutely not symmetrical in any way.
