NEW: Use an Android tablet as dedicated GX Wi-Fi Display (beta)

The GUI is able to scale to any size, the issue you are experiencing is specific to your tablet model, we should be able to fix it but might take some time until we can reproduce and then fix it.

Please let us know the tablet model and Android version.

Since the QR method wasn’t available on the Nexus 7 (2013) I decided to test an older Nexus 7 (2012, the first model) which has an AOSP custom ROM installed (ANdroid 7.1.2 with Google Play).
I have Googlge Chrome installed and have linked my Google account.
The CPU is ARM so should be supported in beta 3.
When manually installing beta 3 I get the message “App not installed. The package appears to e corrupt.”.

I installed the same APK on my Galaxy Tab A8 with Android 14 and there it installed fine.
It would be great if I could re-use the old 2012 Nexus 7 though

@jperez I can report that -beta3 now successfully installs (via manual install) on the above mentioned device.
However, setting gxDisplay as the Home App leads to many refreshes & screen restarts
using it as a stanalone App via Deskktop link is fine.

Report: Lenovo Tab M9 working as a charm.

Tested not working is Lenovo YOGA Tab 3 Pro Tablet (yt3-x90f) running Android 6.01. Tried sideloading the app and it installes but crashes all the time.

Clicking on the welcome screen at factory reset just drops out to launcher without running the welcome wizard in any way - think this was reported earlier for 6.0.1.

Dont know if the tablet, after factory reset, lacks some google updates since it doesnt seem to be able to fetch updates from play store after factory reset. Read some post online that it was needed to download manually. Will try that and get back if I get the GX display app to run.

Venus OS 3.51 and OnePlus 7 (installed via QR) works perfectly.
Thank you Victron for this cool Applikation!

I can confirm that it started working on Galaxy Tab A (SM-T380). Thank you for the update.

What I noticed, is when you want to add your Cerbo by providing an IP address, there is no dot sign available - at least on my device - so you cannot provide the IP

Additionally, I suggest adding the touch event on the right side of the screen when the service menu is opened. The event with the close action is the same as the X icon on the menu. That will make it more comfortable.

Hi everyone,

A new version has been released: v1.00beta4

Changes:

  • Add option to show Android battery level (available in service menu, disabled by default)
  • Fix period symbol is not available on some Android models for manual GX IP configuration.

To update, reset to factory defaults by using the option in the service menu and install the app.

Hi,
We’ve released a new beta right now fixing the manual IP issue.

Thx for info. I’m installing it now. What I see, you’ve added the device battery level - the feature I just wanted to add to the suggestions list

Hello,

Thanks !
One question ! Any possible auto update options/feature instead of reset planed ?

Yes, we are working on it.

Hello and congratulations @jperez for this app it’s great!
Could you create a list of tablets tested and/or validated as working with your software?
Possibly on another post so that users already in possession can submit their model?

I don’t have luck with my old Tablets :frowning:

First I tried a no-name tablet running on Android 7.0.
This tablet booted directly into the system after a factory reset so I didn’t get the welcome-screen.
I also wasn’t able to install the APK manually.

Now I tried an old Galaxy Tab 3 from my parents.
This was running on Android 4.4 but I was able to flash a custom ROM from LineageOS based on Android 7.1.
Again I didn’t get the welcome-screen but this time I was able to install the AKP.
But I always get an “ERROR LOADING WEB” or black screen with “Victron Energy Loading
”

The ‘Error loading web message’ indicates a network issue, meaning the tablet is unable to reach your GX device

The black screen with the Loading message possible reasons:

  • Tablet fails to download the GUI from the GX
  • The GUI can’t start because the GPU or driver lacks the required capabilities.

At this point, have you tried to connect directly to the built-in GX access point? It might help.

==> Good to know !! Thanks!!

I have a Lenovo M7 and the app is working ok but I have some questions:
Is is possible to change the orientation of the display 180 degrees? I have problem with the cable facing right

If I turn off the display with short click the power button it will not resume when I short click the power button after a few minutes. The display is black but the app is working since I can reach the app settings but have to reboot the M7 to get the display back in the app. Battery % is the only thing visible on the display. I have turned off sleep mode and have keep display on set to false. I want to conserve power by turning the display off manually but not want to wait for boot.

When in the black screen state showing only the battery. Can you try to open the service menu and click the reload button? Please let us know if that makes the gui to show again or not.

App crashed after 4-5 days and did not restart itself. Manual restart worked fine.

Nothing happens when I reload web, I can go to Display setting but as soon as I return to the app the gui is gone.
