NEW: Use an Android tablet as dedicated GX Wi-Fi Display (beta)

Hi!

Went out and purchased a cheap Samsung Galaxy A7 Lite tablet and firmware updated it all the way to One UI 6.1. Factory reset it afterwards and follow the instructions in this thread.

Works like a charm to run the QR code, but when everything is done I come to the Setup Wizard and when selecting the Select Device the box is empty.

This can be due to the fact that my Cerbo sits on another VLAN (have access to Cerbo GX from my computer that sits on the same network that the tablet is on). Or it can be due to the fact that my install is still running on v3.50~30 ?

Anyway if there was a way to input the IP adress to the Cerbo that would have been nice.

Two other questions:

  1. How is firmware updates of the tablet planned to happen going forward when having the dedicated app installed? Reset and reenroll?
  2. Charging of the tablet, any thoughts on that? Always have the charger plugged in? Will the battery stop charging at 80% to conserve battery health?

The app uses mDNS to find the GX, so being on two different VLANs could be the issue. Adding an option to manually set the IP of the Cerbo is on the to-do list. As a workaround, if possible, you can temporarily connect the tablet to the same VLAN as the Cerbo, select the GX in the devices menu, and then switch back to the original VLAN. It should work after that.

  1. While in beta, yes, reset and reenroll. For the oficial version we still need to decide. In any case, we donā€™t expect to need frequent app updates. The app pulls the GUI from the Cerbo, so itā€™s always up-to-date with the Venus version running on the GX.
  2. The app does not control battery charging; it charges according to how the manufacturer designed it.

Works great on a old Sony Xperia phone running Android version 8. Successfully installed the app using the QR code.

I have but no luck. They donā€™t appear after restart. Just after the menu has been used a few times.

GODSEND!
Works flawlessly on samsung S10 and the setup was a breezeā€¦ Iā€™m impressed!
Will 3dprint an holder for it and fix it to a wall connected to my pc for charge.
Awesome!

Update: I think this (Purple Line) is the Top Status Bar. You can Hide it but given the device is now in Kiosk Mode I canā€™t open those settings. Maybe a new version of the app can allow you to hide all notification bars, etc

Hi everyone,

A new version has been released: v1.00beta2

Changes:

  • Fix a bug that causes the top status bar to keep appearing.
  • Enable the option to connect to the GX by manually entering the IP address.

To update, reset to factory defaults by using the option in the service menu and install the app.

Hi,
Weā€™ve released an update that should fix this issue. Please let us know if it works for you.

Hi,
Weā€™ve released an update adding an option to manually add the GX IP address.

I have a new unused Lynx_10in with androide11
I did a factory reset to be on the safe side (power and volume down) select boot mode recovery and then factory reset.
After starting the qr-code scanned and the wifi query ā€œgetting ready for workā€. After a few minutes I get the error ā€œcant set up deviceā€ and ā€œcoudnt install the admin appā€.
Does anyone have an idea what I could change?

I have also downloaded the file from Dropbox but I donā€™t know how to install it on an Android. I am a windows person and have zero android experience
EDIT: 26.10.24
I took a new UMIDIGI Android Tablet 13,Tablet 10.1 Zoll
RK3562 Quad-Core,6000mAh,1280 * 800
worked right away :kissing_heart:

What is the exact model?

Thanks alot.
Is there a way to reinstall app without doing the factory reset? ie from Service Menu.
For every update I would have to Factory Reset, reinstall the browser, download the app via Dropbox link and then reinstall the app.

Currently there is no other way to update.

You can try this trick but I donā€™t know if it will work on your phone:

  1. Open service menu
  2. Display settings
  3. At top left corner in some models there is a back button, it will bring you to main Android settings page.
  4. Go to Apps
  5. Find gxDisplay and uninstall it

I solved it with the beta 1 using a ethernet adapter connected to the USB C port - after I thought about it a while its most likly the way that I will have it connected.

BUT that also made me discover another issue, auto-rotate isnt on. So the screen can only be oriented in one way ā€¦ Kind of shame if you want to have the power outlet facing a specific way.

Iā€™ve received dozens of positive feedback messages; users love that they can turn their old devices into something useful and super high-tech. Kudos to the team behind it.

Regarding the video, thank you ā€“ thereā€™s more to come! Weā€™re still in beta with the English channel, but weā€™re growing fast.

I have just had an alarm. I saw it on the display but did not hear it. The Cerbo beeped on the spot. Did I set something wrong? The volume is on, I hear it every time I switch the power supply on or off.
What else I noticed:
Is there any way to check the battery level on the android tablet?

The external tablet is a great thing!

Alarms are not currently implemented to be audible on the Android side, though this may be added in the future.
