NEW: Use an Android tablet as dedicated GX Wi-Fi Display (beta)

Hi.
Sure, but It actually works exactly as described in the first post by jperez.
Only the welcome screen looks slightly different on the Pritom. You have to long press on the “Hello” in the middle. At some point a message will appear saying “Hold for x seconds longer to enter recovery mode” or something similar.
Then the screen will appear where the QR code can be scanned.
Give it a try, it will work.

Greetings,
Christian

FYI, everyone has different devices.
Personally, I bought a new tablet with the latest clean Android 14 for these purposes.

Hello,

First, thank you so much for this feature! I have a problem running an HDMI cable to where I need to have a display set up to monitor the system, so this feature is great!

Just a suggestion, if I may: In the settings, could you add a shortcut to the Android battery settings? This would allow many users to set a charging level. For instance, Samsung allows setting a maximum charging level of the phone at 80%. This prevents batteries from overcharging and expanding, especially since these tablets will usually always be connected. Other brands have similar functionality implemented, so a shortcut to the battery settings would be great to preserve the device.

Thank you again!

I seem to (now?) have issues inputting a WiFi password that contains a space as the spacebar isn’t being recognised? (v1.00beta4)

I have recently tried it on an Acer and Samsung tab with the same result, but if I go to the Android settings I can add the WiFi password ok? I didn’t note the version if it has changed because it all worked ok.

I first installed it on a different Acer tablet and it took the password space ok in the Victron WiFi wizard?

Works fine here on 2 cheap Logicom 7" Tab 76 tablets.
I’m on a dynamic energy contract since the start of 2025, so I like to see what is going on.
Node-RED powered by YouPower.

Had to abandon the Huawei P30 as the battery started to swell due to being plugged in 24/7

I have a Spectralink Versity WiFi android handset, but as it’s an ‘enterprise’ device could not factory reset It.

I therefore tried the APK download link Dropbox and it worked perfectly! Seems to be an easier way than the QR code method. :slightly_smiling_face:

Edit: for reference, I have just done this on a Zebra android scanner device. Also working perfectly :+1:

Same issue here, on a Samsung A9… reloads page every 45 +/- seconds

Quick question:

how do we know what is the latest version of the app without reinstalling?

I’m asking, because I’m running the beta 4 and I cannot wait to see the next version
This project was really great idea and it works very well on my Samsung tab.

I just need to think or find a way to control the battery charging, so it doesn’t blow its battery…

I have been pondering the same issue after the battery on the old Huawei I was using swelled up after a couple of weeks left on charge 24/7

I wondered if maybe something like this would work to charge for an hour or two each day?

Well, I’m considering using a shelly mini and homeassistant to control it (if I don’t find a better option)…

Example:

Control phone charger to prolong phone battery life - Share your Projects! - Home Assistant Community

Same problem here… I have used Delock Products 11828 Delock WLAN EASY-USB Smart Switch MQTT as a workaround. These things can be easily integrated via MQTT, for example to keep the tablet SOC between 20-80% via Node-Red. The whole thing works according to the principle “Caravan battery SOC ok? Switch on when tablet SOC <20%, then active until tablet SOC >= 80% and switch off again”.

However, I was able to access the charge status of the FireHD via the Kiosk app. If that doesn’t work, you can of course simply activate the USB switch (depending on the caravan battery SOC) for 1-2 hours every day.

With my new dedicated Android, I can select in the battery settings that the device is allowed to discharge after 3 days of uninterrupted charging. But I have no idea what happens then or when it starts charging again…

Hello,

FYI

My Samsung tablet is conneted for 2 months now and no battery trouble.
I use a lowpower charger, ~5W I guess, When I plug it to the tablet a pop up message appears telling : slow charging mode.

The only problem until now is that the “Keep Screen On” switch seems to drop after some time, so I need to periodically reboot and put the switch on again.

Same here on Galaxy Tab A other wise its Fantastic
If you hold a finger on Botton left of the tab A for 6-8 seconds you should see login pin Which then allows you to switch it back on

Hi, this works great on a local network - however it doesn’t seem to work with tailscale - manually entereing an IP address. Does connect using the local IP. Other devices using tailscale can connect to the web interface ok. The Tailscale IP is entered and it flashes up saying it cant connect ‘reaload’. When holding the corner of the screen it hasnt saved the tailscale address. This is using the manually installed app (I cant get back to the store to add Tailscale using the QR method)

I have the same trouble when I connect to my Wlan extender (not really good quality) or if the GX device is running firmware 3.60.XX

My current extender create some delays and/or too much latency time response in the network to connect the app to the GX. Other GX on that network are working correctly (3 devices) even connecting them directly with a computer web browser to Gui V2 interface.

If the network bandwidth or data flow is not correct the app is constantly acting like you are saying… showing Reload then trying to connect, connet for few seconds the again error 7 (connection error)…

My conclusions are :
Keep using GX Firmware version 3.5x avoiding 3.6x for now.
Getting a good network (Wlan or Cable) .
If possible, diretly connect the Tablet to the GX device access point.

Similar issue here. Would it be possible to specify a GX device with an FQDN instead of just an IP? I am running VPN solutions that reach my VenusOS-Devices via a tunnel on port 80 or 443 - but the tunnel cannot be addressed via an IP address.

I’ve had no battery problems with an Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet in over 3 years non stop powered on. I’ve been using the Fire HD 10 with Fully Kiosk to view a mirror of the Remote Console before this new more integrated Kiosk mode was available. It’s been constantly plugged in and charged with the screen kept on since December 2021 and no problems. But maybe other tablets have poor quality batteries or a different charging regime.

On which android version is this one? Have exactly the same one but does not work (stable)
