This is a feature request (unless someone has a ‘work around’). I don’t imagine it will be in great demand, but I wonder if it would be relatively simple to implement since it is there for all the other devices, so here’s hoping.
I have two Victron systems, one running my home, another running an off grid hut. If I go to Settings ->Devices on the Cerbo GX then I find that ALMOST every device can be renamed. This is so useful, and to be honest necessary, if other family members are to understand and control these systems. The ‘Immersion heater’ in the list below is really a Shelly smart plug. This can be clearly accessed via the Switch control option top right of the Dashboard. This renaming made it so simple to explain to others in the family how to use it. I am so looking forward to further Shelley integration and functionality.
The one exception to custom naming a device is the Generator - appearing as Genset in the list. I guess this is because it is already pretty self explanatory, but I have read here on the forums about numerous people using the Generator menu options for multiple other purposes. (Victron is so flexible.) I use the Generator functionality in both my systems - but NOT to turn on a generator.
At the off grid hut the Generator stop/start functions and Periodic run actually control the inverter ac output. In the winter it shuts down the power during the long nights to conserve the batteries. Otherwise it is used to force a daily on-site reboot of the router as in the past I have had occasions when I lost all comms with the hut which is remotely monitored. So 'Genset is really ‘Hut mains supply’.
The house runs off grid most of the time. In winter it reconnects at night to recharge the batteries with cheap rate electricity. Once again this is controlled using the Periodic run facility. So ‘Genset’ is really ‘Grid supply’.
It would definitely ease my explanations of how these systems work and enable others to take them over in the future if I could rename the Generator under Devices as with all the other devices.
I was recommended to go with Victron for the hut 6 years ago. I have never regretted that and welcome the many significant improvements and refinements since. They always seem so very well thought out and designed - well done. My only gripe has always been the noise from my 10,000VA Multiplus 2 in the centre of the house. This is partly why I mostly run off grid, it does reduce the noise from the Multiplus if it is left to ‘hunt’ around zero feed in under ESS.
