I was doing firmware updates this afternoon, and during the update of my 500A SmartShunt, and my phone went to screen lock and the update failed. The error screen told me that I might lose communications with the device, and sure enough it disappeared. The blue LED is blinking slowly, and it no longer appears in the list of devices in the Victron Connect app. I restarted the Cerbo GX, and ensured the firmware on all the other devices was up to date. Restarted the Victron Connect app, no change. My SmartShunt isn’t connecting and the Cerbo doesn’t see my battery SOC anymore.
Not quite sure how to power cycle the SmartShunt - it no longer appears as a device in the Cerbo GX or through the app. I guess I could just unplug it and reconnect, haven’t tried that yet. Trying not to make things even worse, but maybe I should give that a try?
I was updating with VictronConnect over Bluetooth.
For any who make it here…I did power down my entire camper (disconnected battery, shut down inverter, etc) so that everything was totally off, then restarted everything. No change. The SmartShunt still has a slow blinking blue light, and does not appear in the device list for the Cerbo or on the Victron Connect app.
Anyone know how to get this back? The owners manual doesn’t seem to have any instructions that will help recover from a failed firmware update.
It might show up with a different name and icon in VictronConnect. Can this perhaps be the case?
Another thing you can try is the firmware update page on the VRM website. This should also detect devices that are connected but still in firmware download mode.
Thank you for the response. I went out and checked, and there are no other devices listed in VictronConnect. I logged into the VRM portal, and the battery monitor is listed as a device, but it appears to be inactive since the failed firmware update. I went to the firmware update tab and it does not appear in the list of devices there.
There must be some way to reactivate the device? Or do I have to somehow delete from the system and add it back again?
Thank you Matthias. I pulled the red power wire from the terminal block, then reinserted it. No change
I’ll call the seller (Battle Born) who has been very helpful with questions in the past. But hard to believe that an interrupted firmware update could lead to throwing away the device. That would be a terrible design flaw.
Issue resolved! For any who come by this…I contacted the seller (Battle Born) and they walked me right through the solution. Note that none of this is laid out in the owners manual (hint hint Victron). If you have a firmware update that fails for some reason:
unplug the positive lead from the device to power it down
on your phone, “forget” all victron equipment in your bluetooth settings
delete the VictronConnect app from your phone
shut down / restart phone
reload VictronConnect app
Re-pair all of your Victron devices through the app when they appear (you’ll need all your bluetooth PIN codes for this)
select each device and update firmware as needed (note the radio button in the VictronConnect app to keep your screen from locking out)
Voila. That process should REALLY be included in the owners manual for all of the devices which require firmware updates. That was a frustrating experience, thank goodness for excellent Battle Born technical support!
But normally that whole process shouldn’t be necessary in the first place.
Maybe deleting the SmartShunt from the phones bluetooth list would have been enough already.
Or trying to connect with another phone.
But good that you could solve the problem for you.
Because of your post and your answer that the SmartShunt was not visible in the VRM firmware list, we looked into this (as it should always be visible). The result is that we found a problem, causing to indeed not show up. We regret that you had to run into this problem and will fix this in a future Venus firmware update.
