EVCS constantly falling off wifi

Hi, does any one have any tips on how to keep the EVCS connected to wifi?

We have one that falls offline every 12-24hours and needs rebooting to bring it back online. V1.30

Unifi Nano HD, about 10ft away, dedicated 2.4g network, only the charger is connected to it.

Thanks!

Can you still connect to it over Bluetooth? When the wifi connection is not available, can you please scan for wifi networks with your phone and tell me if you see the EVCS in access point mode?
There are no answers here because this is not a typical behavior.

Bluetooth still works, have been using Bluetooth to reboot the unit.

Next time it happens I will check if it’s in access point mode.

The old community lists quite a few wifi issues, I have tried all the ideas mentioned there.

yes, but most of them were solved

and it can an issue on that wifi AP as well

Same drop offs with firmware 2.0 but has been staying connected longer recently, even before v2.0

When the device drops offline it is not broadcasting a ssid. Only connectivity that works is Bluetooth.

If it is not switching to AP mode, it means the WIFI connection is still active. But somehow the communication is not allowed. Try a different Wi-Fi channel, different encryption etc

It drops off the network completely. Doesn’t respond to ping and doesn’t show as a connected client.

I’ve different access points and different channels. The key is WPA2

The last few days were lucky if it stays online for a couple of hours.

Can you please release an Ethernet adaptor, at this rate we’ll be sending it back as it’s not fit for purpose.

I’m sorry to hear this, but at this moment you are the only one with this issue.
You say that over Bluetooth it is still accessible, when it is disconnected from wifi, can you tell me what is the wifi state displayed by Victron Connect ? Eventually a print screen?

I’m the only one reporting an issue but there has been multiples in the past.

From what I remember victron connect shows everything is ok, wifi connected etc, there is a notification that it’s lost comms with the Gx device.

I’ve not long rebooted it, will screen shot it next time.

All in the past were solved, there is no unsolved issue.
Can you describe a bit the network structure and what devices are used?
Also, if it is happening that often, can you try with your phone as a hotspot and check if it’s the same? The microcontroller inside is an ESP32 and Wifi and BT are using shared resources. So if BT is working, there is no hardware issue. So I still believe it is maybe some incompatibility issue. Let’s try to understand it.

Here you go. App thinks wifi is all ok.

2 suggestions:

  • Can you make a reservation for the EVCS in your DHCP server and configure the EVCS for DHCP ip address? This is for preventing conflicting IP addresses, that will cause a similar behavior.
  • Scan period, why is disabled? Enable it and check if that helps.

I can change it to DHCP and reserve the address. This address is outside of the DHCP scrope and no other device is using this address.

Scan is disabled as there is only one network to connect to.

As per the manual: Scan period: If there is only one network to connect to (e.g. a router), the scan period can be set to 0 to avoid unnecessary scanning during an existing connection. If the EVCS connects to more than one network, it is recommended to leave it at the default (60)

The EVCS is connecting to Unifi access points, UAP-AC-Pro, UAP-AC-Lite and NanoHD. Only one of these access points broadcasts the ssid set for the charger. Have tried all 3 types with same results. These access points along with the Cerbo are conneced to an Araknis 420 Network switch, the core network switch is an Araknis 920 and the router is an Araknis 520. There is well over 100 devices connected to the network with around 40 of them being wifi. There is a large Control4 home automation system running on this network, as well as some other control systems. Nothing else has issues and has been running fine for a long time.

I understand, but there are other tens of thousands EVCSs installed, and there are no issues reported. So it must be something with settings or an incompatibility.

But if there are multiple APs you have to enable scanning! That scanning function is not for different SSID, it is also for when you have the same SSID broadcasted from multiple access points. So please enable it with 60s scanning period.

The ssid is broadcasting on one access point only. The closest one to the charger currently. I have tried this with 3 different types of access point so I could be sure as to which AP the charger was connecting to.

The ssid is only used by the charger, it’s also only 2.4g

I’m not familiar with Unifi settings, I’m using Microtik.
I’m going to write you in private

I have a possibly related issue
I live off the grid
I have a Victron EV charger in my garage and a victron inverter and solar charger system in another shed separated from the house
I have fibre internet into the house, directly feeding a Unifi AP that provides wifi to the house and garage
I have a Unifi AP in my separate shed that picks up the wifi signal from the AP at the house
I have dedicated IP addresses for the EV charger and victron system
The Ubiquiti system has been set to only accept the EV wifi onto the main AP in the house
Everything works perfectly and has done for some time, unless I turn on a Unifi AC mesh in the house to improve coverage in one bedroom with a poor signal, that backs onto the garage
Once I turn on the AC mesh, the EV wifi drops off, loses its IP address and broadcasts it own SSID.
If I turn off the AC mesh everything returns to normal after 5 minutes or so

Thanks @dorian.kiwi, thanks for your feedback and for the solution
