Does a (Multiplus) MK3-USB-c provide power to charge a phone, or can USB hub be used?

I’ve bought a Victron interface MK3-USB-c for my Multiplus, which is built into my boat. I’m considering building an old android phone into my dashboard. GPS navigation, speedometer, radio, MP3 player, app to see what my (bluetooth) battery is doing… But it would also be nice if I’d connect that MK3-USB-c magic box. To also be able to check what the inverter is doing, and maybe on-the-fly change the AC-in limits.

But if I’m going to build an phone into my dashboard, it also needs power. And with the MK3 connected, the USB port (for charging purposes), is occupied. So the question is: is the Victron interface MK-3-c able to charge my phone? If not, can I plug a USB-c hub into my phone, with the interface and a charger connected?

Can’t comment on if it does or not.

Maybe as you have one, plug it in and see?

Forgot to pay attention when I connected it yesterday. Boat is about an hour away from where I live.

VE.bus is a communication bus, there is no (usable) voltage on it.
It’s more likely that the MK3 needs a bit power from your phone.

Would it play nice with a USB-c hub, with a charger connected to a secondary hub port?

Theoretically I would say yes but I don’t know, I never had the need to try that.
I think you need to try it yourself or hope that someone here already did that.

Hi all,
I did a test with different hubs and a USB C splitter and to my suprise I got the best results with the splitter. Tried 3 hubs i only 1 did both connect to the MK3 and charge the phone. Below a photo of the splitter. Connect the charger to the charge input and the MK3 to the headphone.
Had a look on Amazon and there are a lot of USB C splitters available, My advice would be to order one and try.

Thanks! Such a splitter makes so much sense! One port dedicated to data, and the other one dedicated to pure power.

Found them in a brick and mortar store local to me @ 2,99. For sure worth a gamble!
