I want to charge a Victron Lithium 20 Ah from my big LiFePo 300 Ah with aan additional/separate Orion Tr-Smart 12/12 18A (charging the battery for my Dinghi from the main boat battery), especially when neither Shorepower nor Alternator power is available. When not in use, I want to shut it down with an interruptor - see drawing. Is this going to work?
The switch will work, alternatively you can use the remote on/off.
But 18A of charge might be a bit much for a 20Ah LiFePo, i would check the specs first.
Also, consider mounting the Orion close to the battery being charged, to keep cables and thus voltage loss at a minimum. For the input wiring you can use an anderson connector for example.
Thanks chrigu. Good news.
The 18A seems to be the smallest available - or am I wrong with that?
Sterling Power makes a 12/12 10amp.
Checked the specs, 15A charging power for the 20 Ah. How big may the risk be to charge it with 18? Will I blow it up?
Thanks - but would love to stay in the Victron system as I will have all the infos in the same app…
Charging it up from empty i would be cautious, since that would mean 18A of charge current for about an hour. It might get a bit hot.
But you said its a dinghi, so i guess its the starter battery for the outboarder? Then its most of the time fully charged, meaning it wont go to 18A of charge current, or not for a long time anyway.
Sadly theres no adjustable current limit for the non-XS Orions
Thanks Chrigu - it’s the battery for a electric outboarder (the smallest Minn Kota, about as much power as a Bamix), the 20 Ah lasts about 30-40 mins, so it is rather empty quite often.
Maybe I just stick with the Blue Smart charger, running it fro the inverter.
It was probably more of a “nice to have”-idea to have a 12V-charging-plug to avoid loading gear messing around.
If you went with an Orion XS, you can program the current.
