Android GX Display v2.0beta1 available for testing

Hi all,

A new beta is available. The beta line is renamed from 1.5beta to 2.0beta, because it has
grown into the largest change to the app so far.

How to get it

If your display is already on a beta, it will update by itself during the night, or press and
hold the lower left corner of the screen for five seconds and use Check for updates.

If you are on v1.4, open that same menu, turn on Beta updates, then check for updates. The
same steps with screenshots are in the
v1.5beta1 post.

Displays on v1.4 that tried to install v1.5beta2 got Update install error!. That beta was
numbered below v1.4, which Android refuses to install. This one installs normally.

Coming from v1.x

This beta includes everything from the 1.5 betas, described in full in the
v1.5beta1 post:

  • VRM when you are away. The display shows the GX’s own interface on the local network and
the same installation through the VRM remote console when it is not, switching by itself in
both directions. Sign in from Installation in the menu, using VRM’s own login page, and
pick the installation to show. A display can be set up this way with no GX nearby at all.
  • A new look, matching the GX interface, with a theme setting the page follows.
  • Faster loading and less data used, and no need to log in again when the GX changes address.

New in this beta

New features

  • Lock touch, in the Display section of the menu, keeps the page visible but stops it
reacting to touch, for a display mounted where people walk past. Five taps lift it. The
    settings corner always keeps working.
  • Quick installation switch, also in the Display section and off until you turn it on.
With it on, a swipe in from the right edge of the screen lists the installations in your
account and switches to the one you pick.

Improvements

  • The update download shows its progress, and a failed update says why it failed.
  • While the display is changing to VRM or to another installation it says so, instead of
    showing an error screen.

Fixes

  • Displays that went blank, or stayed on an error screen once the GX was back, now bring
    themselves back on their own.
  • Displays no longer lose the GX when it changes address, or follow a different Venus device
    on the same network.
