Android GX Display v1.5beta1 is available. The main addition is VRM: the display can
now show an installation through the VRM remote console when the GX is not reachable on the
local network, and goes back to the local GX as soon as it is.
This is a beta. Please only put it on a display you are willing to have break.
New
VRM account login, from the Installation screen.
Automatic switching between the local GX and VRM, in both directions, with nothing to set.
Installations from your VRM account are listed together with the GX devices found on the
network. You pick the installation, not the connection.
A display can be set up with a VRM account only.
No need to log in again when the GX changes IP address.
Faster loading and less data used. The GX interface is kept on the display and reused.
New look, matching the GX interface.
Several internal improvements.
How to enable the beta channel
The beta is delivered through the app’s own update check, so you switch a display over from
inside it. Your display must already be running v1.2.
Press and hold the lower left corner of the screen for five seconds to open the
configuration menu.
Turning the beta channel off again stops further beta updates, but it does not move the display
back to the release version. It stays on the beta until a release is published that is newer.
Feedback
Please report anything you find in this thread, and include the tablet model, its Android
version, the GX device and whether the display was on the local network or on VRM at the time.
Thanks for this. Great addition to the app, which I use on a Spectralink Versity running Android 10. This is installed via APK as QR code can’t be used on the Spectralink due to camera /admin restrictions.
Just been having a bit of a play! Beta downloads fine (although seems to download the file twice) and updates with no problem.
Signing into VRM proved to be a bit cumbersome as the confirmation emails with login link were sent to my other device so didn’t work. I tried manually typing in the password from my chrome password manager, (also on my other main device) but that also didn’t seem to be recognised.
Ending up installing VRM on the old Android device I run the app on, and creating a token which was then cut and pasted into the login screen. All then worked fine.
I did notice though that it allowed me to select my other system using a globallink 520 which of course shouldn’t work, but I tried just for fun! It attempted to connect, and then opened VRM in the app, which took a lot of random screen presses to eventually back out of. Maybe non compliant systems shouldn’t be shown to prevent idiots like me trying to use them and breaking things
No major issues found yet, minor one: autorotate screen doesn’t rotate instead it changes screen from landscape to portrait orientation. Maybe change the menu label to screen orientation? I like the extra sub menus, that allow access to the system settings. This version stays locked on the IP address ! No more reloading to try to connect. Big improvement, it’s instantly loaded as soon as I open the cover. So far it’s switch between my GX and network with no issues. I like the info in the sub menu.
For every VRM Remote Console selected via Installations, I get either the local Remote Console accessible over Wi-Fi, or the error message Unable to connect to the GX if there is no GX device running on that Wi-Fi network.
Up to now I was running V2 GUI on a few Android tablets with free version of “fully kiosk browser”, which has the advandtage of keeping the tablet useable for other Apps as well which is a disadvantage at the same time dependent on the use case on site.
So I tried your solution (beta) which works like a charm. (Lenovo Tab M9, MediaTek G80, 3GB RAM, 32GM ROM, Android 12)
There is only one thing: Is it possible to turn on the screen by tapping on it somewhere like it works with the native display? That would be really great.
In my case after screen timeout I have to press the power button to turn on the screen again. This is ofc not a big deal but tapping the screen instead would be really nice thing. Do I miss something here ?
Good day, I’m now running version 1.3 and I’m also being offered the beta update option. Version 1.5.2 is found and offered for download. However, I always end up on the official website 8. Alternative installation via APK
And basically download version 1.3 again. Kind regards
When the app is installed via the APK file the self-update mechanism is not available, that is why you see “download” instead of “install”. In the notifications bar of the phone I see a download icon, that is probably the apk that has been downloaded. So you need to open the notifications bar and then open the file.
