VRM 11.09 DESS strange behaviour, bug, Multiplus II not charging?

More or less since the latest release of VRM, my DESS has strange behaviours. I am in green mode DESS, and it worked like a charme before. Now even if no grid consumption is planned or needed (enough in the battery), it takes little but constant from the grid (+/- 200W) . its not much, but it shouldn’t. on the other side during day with sunshine, instead of first charging the battery, about 10-20% are exported. As my screenshot shows, for no reason it takes from the grid at night, and for no reason it exports now a little instead of charging. Grid setpoint is -50W (which worked fine before to keep a zero  ). I know that in DESS the grid setpoint is rules by DESS, but nevertheless.. Did something change in the algorythm of DESS. How can I influence that behaviour. In Green mode, battery should be charged first. The problem must be related to DESS logic, not Venus 3.8beta (same problem with 3.7)

When you have dynamic prices and selling2grid enabled, it is usual behaviour that dess will not charge the battery right in the morning. It will schedule the charging, so it happens during the lowest feedin prices, which usually causes solar feedin in the morning and evening and battery charging during the day.

What is your configured chargerate in VRM? Sometimes the scheduler does not leave the system in “freeflight” during charging hours but applies a schedule to charge at the maximum rate (or less, if there is lower solar) - so if you have configured the chargerate to ~10.000 that could cause the difference above being feedin as well.

The nightly consumption from grid should not happen, there should be enough energy left in the battery to last for the night. How are your nightly consumption forecasts? Are they accurate or more on the “way to low” side?

I fully agree and I knew that. And that’s how it worked before VRM version 11.09. Maybe I id not explain well. All worked fine or as expected before that release. Now DESS is doing things where it even does not stick to its own plan/schedule.

look at this chart where it already took energy from the grid for no reason. There was enough in the battery, no special use spike. As a proof, in the early morning, when grid is expensive there was enough energy in the battery to sell… after that, for again no apparent reason it bought again (at very high price). then when the sun shines, it predicted not to buy nor to sell to the grid (as it should be), but instead it starts to sell 10-20% constantly to the grid instead of pushing it in the battery. I am in green mode (not economic)

then look at the chart now, it changes prediction, sells instead of pushing in the battery. You might say, it knows there will be enough solar energy today, but then it does not consider my EV waiting that the battery are charged to start charging to my car.

DESSprefers to inject, rather than to see there is a job waiting, charging the car.

and prediction where it will not stick, at night it will draw a little from the grid, but should not, and you see clearly that its prediction now is clearly not to sell, but then, it sells nevertheless, again and again, all over the rest of the day where there is sunshine

also this small constant charging during nights are certainly not economic nor needed, as I have pretty large battery (70kWh) and i consume on average very little (<1kWh)
situation now:

the situation yesterday as an examle: at night permanent small draw, at day permanent small export. Both have not been before the september release of VRM. That’s why I think something has changed in the algorythm of DESS, and its not a progress. I wish I had more control of the “strategy”

update:

I found out one part of the problem, why during day time (sunshine) I have a permanent export. All the Energy produced by my Fronius Symo 15.0, instead of going into the battery , the energy is exported to the grid (minus Loads). My 3 Multiplus II 6K% do not charge the battery. why? (they did it for three months!!) The Multiplus are now in absorption Charge and as you see on the screenshots, the battery is far from being full?

The multiplus can invert (drawing from the batteries), but will not charge?

This is also the reason the system cannot stick to the plan (screenshots posted before) and even if not planned it exports the energy from the Fronius (minus loads)

What can this be? Multiplus that hang? VRM? (btw no change is DESS is on or off)

I would assume something simpler:

You had the system power off once, and when you turned it back on, you switched the physical switch into “Inverter only” rather than “Inverter and Charger” Position.

Thus, your Multis are just inverting - and the overall DESS-Schedule, planing them to charge solar2battery as well will not work out?

No, the system had not been powered off since commissioning in May. Luckily—or unfortunately—I found the culprit.

The MultiPlus-II 6k5 on L1 is failing with a persistent VE.Bus Error 8/11, diagnostic code 0x808804, failing at Step 8. I tested all three MultiPlus-II units, and the one on L1 is unable to synchronise with the grid (the Mains LED remains off).

The system is now reconfigured as a 2-phase system and is working again. It also no longer exports energy during the daytime, as it should. Now time to open an RMA request :grimacing:
