I read in my Victron MPPT 100v 30Amp manual that it is recommended to use the “smart battery sense” item for properly and safely charging the battery. My question is: is it a necessity?
I have a battery display screen which displays the voltage, and the current charge capacity. And I suppose the MPPT already detected the battery settings on first connection, and chose the appropriate settings for charging the battery?
The Smart Battery Sense measures the actual battery voltage and actual.battery temperature.
The MPPT measures the voltage at the battery terminals on the MPPT which will be higher than the battery due to voltage loss. At high charge currents during absorption this will reduce the charge current a bit but will not matter at the end of charge when current is low.
The MPPT measures its own temperature at the start of the day and assumes the battery is at the same temperature. If the battery temperature can vary a lot then this is not ideal.
