Dual MPPT 100/50 difference in Battery Voltage

I have had a SmartSolar MPPT 100|50 installed in my caravan with about 400W of solar panels on the roof for about a year without any issues. I recently installed a second SmartSolar MPPT 100|50 for use with an additional single 475W that I can place on the ground to find sun when the van is in the shade.

The issue I have encountered is that the second MPPT battery voltage increases rapidly under full sun conditions and leaves Bulk charging prematurely compared to the original MPPT (and also the voltage reported by the battery BMS). When in cloudy conditions, both MPPT’s report similar voltages, but when the sun peaks out, the original MPPT remains at about the same battery voltage as the BMS, while the second MPPT quickly (within seconds) climbs to the Absorption voltage and leaves Bulk.

This occurs regardless if I have the two units synchronized using VE.Smart Network or not, with the only difference being that when networked, the original MPPT also leaves Bulk.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Is there a way to have the original MPPT report the battery voltage to the secondary MPPT to keep it in line?

Quoting from the Manuel…

There can only be one product in the network that transmits battery voltage and/or battery temperature. It is not possible to use a battery monitor together with a Smart Battery Sense, or multiple of these devices.
When setting up the network, first set up the Smart Battery Sense or battery monitor, and then add one or more solar chargers or AC chargers to the network.

Do you have a smartshunt?

Thanks for the reply, no Victron smartshunt, just the shunt in the JK BMS which is not included in the VE.Smart network. The VE.Smart network simply consists of the two MPPT controllers.

Is there a way to specify which controller should be the master, or does it require a seperate device like the Smart Battery Sense or Smart Shunt with Battery Monitor?

Sorry i think you need either Smart Battery Sense or Smart Shunt with Battery Monitor.

Normally a battery voltage of 0v would indicate a disconnect between the mppt and battery. Ie fuse blown or breaker open.

Also a mppt that raises voltage to absorp levels would indicate the same.
