I bought a 24V/200 Ah lithium smart battery for my boat. When I bought it, I didn’t notice that it didn’t have an internal BMS. I am charging this battery only with Victron Orion 12/24-15 (inputs are connected to my service battery 12V 200Ah with an input voltage lock-out option to avoid over-draining the service battery).
Now, my question is, do I need any kind of external BMS, or am I fine with this setup as it is?
Without the BMS you have no protection from high or low battery voltage, high or low cell voltage or high or low temperature. Therefore you are at risk of damaging your battery and rendering it useless.
You should assuming you have a simple system add a small BMS and a Smart Battery Protect to isolate your loads on low voltage. The Small BMS can shut down the Orion on overvoltage or low temperature via the remote connection. Go to the Victron site and check out the different BMS options.
Thank you for the clarification, with small BMS i only have to connect BMS cables and bat +/-, or do some additional wires need to be connected to Orion?
You need to wire the BMS allow to charge to the Orion remote input and the allow to discharge to a Smart Battery Protect for the loads. See Section 3.3.1 in the manual for an example with a solar controller rather than Orion.
I see. So, I need Ve.Direct non-inverting cable to cut off charge from Orion, and I need one cable to cut off Load on Smart Battery Protect. Thank you for the help!
