Use Victron Orion-Tr Smart 48/12-30A charger to charge starter battery

All,

I want to use a Victron Orion-Tr Smart 48/12-30A charger to charge a starter battery (12V) from a generator.
Is it Ok for the Victron charger that it is connected and active when the generator start or will it be damaged by the high start current of the generator?

You mean high voltage from generator start? The input voltage range is 32-70v for the 48/12-30, per the manual, so I suppose it should be ok. The min input voltage shutdown and restart voltages are listed also, 28v, and 30v IIRC.

No, when the generator starts it will draw a large current from the starter battery to which the output of the Victron Orion-Tr Smart 48/12-30A charger is connected. (The input of the charger is connected to a 48V battery bank).
My question is, if this large start current can damage the charger?

The 48/12 30 will supply only up to it’s 30a output to the 12v battery, if it sees the 12v battery voltage drop a bit, and probably only if the voltage is lower for some time. It may or may not trigger a new charging cycle, bulk absorb float, and that should be appropriate depending on the size of the starter battery and what energy the generator requires for cranking.

But, no, I can’t see how larger load on output side battery, like cranking a generator, would matter at all to the charger. Similar or much less than engine starter load also.

There’s a delayed start parameter setting, but that’s for the input side of the charger. Waits to restart the charger, charging house battery, until starter battery has been topped off by engine, then begin charging the house battery. Doesn’t apply in your case.

What is your system layout? Even ascii art is enough to explain. Is it something like this?

solar mppt ---- 48v house batt ---- 48/12-30 charger ----- 12v veh & gen starter (and 12v house loads?) battery ---- generator ----- gen AC output ---- xxxVac to 48v charger to house battery

Thanks for the info.

The system layout is
