Question on fitting Blue Smart IP22 charger and MPPT 100/30

Hi,

My old rather basic solar controller failed whilst on holiday so I have purchased the above solar controller and decided to purchase a mains charger at the same time.

I am about to fit these to my camper van, however I am unable to get to where the negative wires connect to the ground on the vehicle, I am thinking they must be behind the cabinets as I can see the cables run that direction. I have a couple of questions:

  1. For the mains charger is there any alternate option? Can I connect it directly to the -ve terminal on the battery, or is connecting it to the vehicle shell an option and will this work?
  2. for the MPPT charger the instructions seem to suggest that this does not need to be grounded so can be connected straight to the battery terminals or am I misunderstanding.

I have purchased appropriate cables with appropriate inline fuses it is just this last part around connecting the -ve terminal.

I am in the UK if this makes any difference.

Thanks so much

Simon

You can connect direct to the battery negative terminal. The battery negative terminal.should connect to the chassis/ vehicle body somewhere.

The only thing to be cautious of is if you have a shunt or battery monitor connected to the battery. If this is the case then connect the chargers to the system side of the shunt rather than to the battery. See sketch below

Hi,

Thanks so much for the quick response, there is no shunt as far as I am aware and definitely no battery monitor.

Thanks

Simon
