I am planning on installing an Orion xx 12v to 12 volt converter in my 2025 Airsteam trailer. I tow with a 2024 Ford Expedition.
I think I understand the installation instructions for a couple of models okay. They instruct to use the input voltage monitoring to trigger output and not deplete the tow vehicle battery.
However, I am discouraged over the low input current the Expedition is expected to provide, using the 7 pin connector. I followed another thread where an expert explained why to another person.
I came up with an alternative method of using an Orion with the 7 pin connector. The plan would be to disable “engine detect” altogether. The question is how much more will an Orion draw than the probable 11 amps it likely could draw with voltage cutoff engine detect on?
Engine detect is intended to prevent the Orion from depleting the tow vehicle start battery when the alternator is not providing enough power. However, the 2025 Ford Expedition has its own protection. It disconnects power to the 7 pin when the alternator is not working. (Or when ever the computer thinks it should.)
Engine detect in the Orion should not be needed. This would allow the Orion to try to suck more current from the tow vehicle even when voltage drop in the wire drops below 13.1 typical cutoff.
Note: I am not sure the tag diy is about my level of expertise or it to whom I am asking the question. I will accept advice from experts as well as knowledgeable people.
