“Orion Smart 12/12-30A stuck cycling at 7.7 V input (HQ2228CYXPM, FW v1.13)”

Hello Victron team,

I have an Orion Smart 12/12-30A Non-isolated (Serial: HQ2228CYXPM).

Firmware: v1.13 (bootloader v1.02)

VictronConnect: v6.22 (latest from App Store)

Issue:

While driving, the Orion shows the input voltage collapsing to about 7.7 V. When this happens it cycles on/off every ~10 seconds and does not charge the leisure battery.

The actual starter battery/alternator voltage is stable at 12–14 V (confirmed with a multimeter), so the 7.7 V is not real.

Troubleshooting done:

  • Wiring and fuse sizes checked against Victron wiring guides :white_check_mark:

  • Engine shutdown detection & input lock-out values adjusted many times :white_check_mark:

  • VictronConnect app updated :white_check_mark:

  • SmartSolar and other Victron devices working fine :white_check_mark:

From the VictronConnect release notes (v6.18), I can see Orion Smart firmware v1.16 was released, which reportedly fixes similar bugs. However, my Orion only shows v1.13 as the “latest available”, which makes me think my hardware batch hasn’t yet been given access to v1.16.

Could you please confirm whether firmware v1.16 (or newer) can be applied to my unit, and if so, provide the manual firmware file or instructions to update?

Any idea of what else can cause it? For reference it’s a 2018 Ford Transit

Right now alternator charging is effectively unusable due to this cycling behaviour.

Thank you for your help

Mia
