Optimizers, cannot be used on an off-grid system. Could some explain why they can't?

I have read that they cannot be used on an off-grid system. Could some explain why they can’t ?
I got a quote for a grid connected system and included were 4 optimizers. However, when I read about off-grid systems, it was highlighted as a definite NO! without explanation. I am curious why this is the case and hope some knowledgeable person here could explain it to me. Thanks.
