Multiplus goes to last charge state when plugged into shore power. Should be bulk but goes to float

We are on a trawler and have a Multiplus 12v/ 3000/120amp/120v, smartshunt , cerbo gx, 6 lifeline GPL L16T AGMs, everything professionally installed within the last 2 months.

When we connect to shore power/generator, the charger goes to the charge state we were in when we unplugged. The batteries could be at 55% but if we disconnected from power when it was charging in float or absorption it goes directly to that charge state not bulk.

Our installer is very experienced but after many hours and improvements and tests to our system we still can not find a solution.

How do we get the charger to start in bulk and go through the bulk/absorption/float charging program ?

This normally depends on the battery voltage when the AC is plugged in. If this is less than the absorption voltage- the rebulk offset, then it should start in Bulk mode. If it’s above that voltage, it’s likely to start in float.

In a couple of our tests the batteries were at 55%, about 12.2 V and it went right to float. Float was the charge state when we turned off the ac supply.

Try a firmware upgrade?

The charger/inverter is only a month old, should be up to date. Nonetheless I will check on the firmware for updates.

There is a firmware update for the multiplus….. have not updated…. checking with our installer.

Looking at the multiplus on victron connect…. there is a setting “enable battery monitor” that we are finding conflicting information about. We have it turned off….. what is this setting used for?

Don’t enable battery monitor. That is for installations that are all AC loads with no DC/battery loads. For example, a system that the only thing connected to the batteries is the multiplus. If you have any DC loads at all connected to the battery bank you want to use an external battery monitor like a Smartshunt or BMV like you already are.

This enables the Multiplus internal estimation of SOC. Generally not very useful.
