Mppts appear to be throttled

The system:

  • 5kWp->SmartSolar MPPT VE.Can 150/100 II 250/70 (v3.13 [v3.16 oscillating])->

    |->Pylontech battery stack

    |->3xMultiPlus-II 48/3000/35-32 (3-phase system)

    Energy Meter VM-3P75CT

    Cerbo-GX

Settings:

  • BMS automatic (Pylontech battery)

    AC input 1 (grid)

ESS mode (optimized for battery life)

    ESS SOC Min (25%)

ESS active SOC limit (80%) [set automatically]

    ESS target value grid (0W)

Purpose:

  • Maximum self-consumption

    Additional information:

There are two independent VE systems on the roof, which allows for a direct comparison of solar performance.

Hey and hello

folks,

Got a problem:

For several days now, the yield has been very low due to a lack of sunlight, and the battery charge has fallen below the set SOC.

Now, when there is sunlight, the solar output seems to be throttled. The smaller comparison system delivers more power than the system in question here.

Question:

- Has anyone had similar experiences?

- What options are there for finding out the cause or reason for the “throttling”?

Thank you for your helpful answers.

Are you seeing anything like sustain?
Or are your temperatures below 17°C?

Hej LX,
Thanks for the feedback.

I’m not sure what you mean by sustain.
And which temperature think about?

The battery or inverter temperature. If they are can connected battery you can see the temp there pylons send it to the system

The triggers are described in the manual.

What does a battery temperature of 17°C tell me?

Possible cause of insufficient (throttled) solar power:

AC-coupled PV surplus feed-in was incorrectly activated instead of DC-coupled.

[Einstellungen→System Setup→ESS→Netzeinspeisung]

The second problem has not yet been solved.

SOC = 15%, the “active SOC limit” is displayed as 80%. Why is the battery (charged at 58% capacity) load completely by PV, and why is the consumption current drawn directly from the grid rather than from the battery and/or solar power?
Any ideas as to why this is the case, or instructions on how to determine the cause?

Latest status: Now active SOC-Limit reads 75%.

It is possible battery life is causing the throttling

I suspected as much. But trial and error methods haven’t gotten me anywhere so far.

Are there any procedures for narrowing down the cause?

did you find any solution?

my battery also charges only to 63%, then mppt goes into absorption. its super annoying when you have one sunny day within 3 weeks and then the battery does not get charged to 100%
so far the only workaround was to completely disable bms /dvcc control until i get the overcharge alarm… but this is not a solution.

I have the same issue here with the SmartSolar MPPT 150/70-Tr VE.Can and SmartSolar MPPT 250/100-Tr VE.Can

I can use 2x2 solarpaels 455Wp on the small one and 1x4 splarpanels on the big one hence both have 1820Wp.

Both sets are on the SAME ROOF and side by side, but the 150/70 deliver more.

It seems, this is an efficiency problem with the 250/100. Adding a second 1x4 string to the 250/100 double the power output of the small one (because of the higher voltage it works longer in the morning and evening).

In comparison: If I get from the 150/70 2000Wh a day, the 250/100 give me only 1700Wh.

But if I add a second 1x4 string to the 250/100, then I get roughly 4000Wh.

If I put 2x2 Strings on the 250/100, then I get only 1600Wh and with 3x2 strings around 2900Wh

I had several weeks the hell of testing and re-wireing to get this results.

P.S.: I am at 59deg Latitude in Estonia.

Yesterday, I had to switch off the mains power and did not deactivate the PV system. This morning, the sun is shining and the solar yield is being reduced to zero at regular intervals (as has happened before. I reinstalled the older MPPT firmware V3.13).

First, I deactivated the Pylontech BMS as a test. That caused a lot of confusion. But a message appeared saying that the VE.Bus needed to be rescanned.

Then I set the BMS (System Setup-> Batteries) back to Automatic and rescanned the VE-Bus (Devices → MP-II → Advanced). That didn’t really improve the situation.

Finally: Settings → Devices → MPPT-> BMS → reset. Eureka, that helped. Hopefully permanently.

That’s how I imagine correct behavior!

it took my 2 days trying everything incl. enabling/disabling ESS the complicated way..

However, it seems that DVCC should stay turned off by default!

and after further debugging i finnaly found out that the TBB ES100II Battery has a firmware issue. Now waiting for the new firmware and the usb to bus cable.

hopefully the new firmware will fix the issue.:crossed_fingers:

its just crazy that nowadays you have to find out manufacturer failures by yourself and then make a hell lot of noise or reprogramm the stuff yourself..

(outdated manuals and searching hours to find a contact address is another issue, yes victron, where are the humans to contact?)
