Lynx bms in test mode on 3rd party batteries disconnects on low cell voltage but battery has 52V

Hi all,

Commissioning a 3 phase ESS in my home - 16 kWh 16S battery setup, Lynx bms, Multiplus, Cerbo. All dc cables connected, ac cables disconnected for now so I can do the Multiplus configuration.

Battery has 66% - 52V. The problem is the bms keeps disconnecting due to “low cell voltage” but there is plenty voltage.

Any ideas?

Is that 16s battery from victron, and compatible with the lynx BMS? Meaning non-NG batteries for a non-NG BMS, and vice versa.

You can have a weak cell while the rest are fine, and the output voltage will still be acceptable as well.

Also, you are setting up the system for the first time, those 66% SOC are a mere guess, until the batteries got fully charged and the BMS has reset to 100% SOC on its own.

These are new grade A 314 Ah EVE cells and not from Victron so there is no communication with the battery other than voltage and amps.

I know the 66% charge is a rough guess, this will clean up I hope with the shunt going throught a full charge/discharge cycle. but the voltage is 100 % stable and with 52V should have lots of margin to the discharge floor, also since I have no loads connected at all.

Suspect I need to connect the ac side but I figured to better configure the Multiplus without ac connected, this seems to be the safer way?

So you cant use a Lynx BMS. It is solely for the Victron SmartLithium, since those contain one part of the BMS in the battery pack, the balancer (and in case of NG packs also a shunt), the Lynx BMS merely communicates with those balancers. Without them, then there is effectively not really a BMS, just the outside part of it.

Did you bridge the two M8 connectors or how did you get it to “work” in the first place?

Since thats not the first time that someone wants to use the Lynx BMS with non-Victron batteries, how did you come to the conclusion that this would work fine?

As far as I know, the Lynx BMS will.not work with a DIY battery, it needs to connect to Victron lithium batteries that have Victron comms. If you do not have a Victron battery then no data is available to the Lynx BMS. The only workaround as far as I sm aware is with the older Lynx Smart BMS (not NG) to loop a comms cable from comms input to output to get the BMS to work. However, the BMS is then not acting like a real BMS and will not provide protection against high or low cell voltages or temperature. You need to have a BMS on the battery cells.

A supplier Helion here in the Netherlands sells complete Victron systems plus third party battery packs. They also use the Lynx bms so it should work. Main reason they use it is for safety and remote /automatic disconnect as suggested in new safety regulations. I agree it will not monitor the cell level, but I have a separate bms (jk bms) doing that for the 16 cells.

So from the Lynx I would use the contactor, the shunt, the pre- charge resistor and not some of the monitoring features- Iwas aware of that. Will need to find out how exactly to make it work.

Would be really interested if anyone here has done this?

Forgot to mention I am using the older Lynx Smart BMS (non NG)

In that case, I you need one of the Victron M8 comms cables connected between the in and out comms ports to fool the Lynx BMS into working as you describe. The manual describes this as a method to check the BMS is working. I have heard of the Lynx BMS being used like this.

Meanwhile I have installed the loop bms cable on the Lynx smart bms and it works perfectly! Many thanks again for your help.

Next I need to connect the jkbms to the Cerbo with the type B cable, to get the jkbms acting as the master in dvcc. I also found I need to wire the remote contacts from the lynx bms to the jkbms alarm relay contacts in order to disconnect the battery in an alarm event.

Has anybody here attempted to make this work?
