Issues Communicating Pylontech UP5000 with VE ESS

:pushpin: System Description

I am setting up a system with the following components:

  • 2x MultiPlus-II 48/5000, configured in split-phase with 120° phase rotation and floating phase 2.
  • 2x MPPT 150/60, each connected to:
    • 6x Trina Solar Vertex II 505W panels, arranged in 2S3P per MPPT (total: 12 panels).
  • 1x Ekrano GX for system monitoring.
  • 1x Pylontech UP5000 battery (100Ah, 4.8kWh, 48V LiFePO4).

:wrench: Issues Encountered

:one: The Pylontech UP5000 battery is not detected by the Ekrano GX.

  • I have fabricated a Type A compatible CAN cable to connect the battery’s CAN port to the VE.CAN port on the Ekrano GX.
  • However, the battery does not appear in the list of devices on the GX system.

:two: Possible Causes of Communication Issues with Ekrano GX

:white_check_mark: Incorrect CAN bus wiring

  • I have confirmed the pinout for Type A CAN connection but still no detection.
  • Does the CAN bus require a termination resistor on the Ekrano GX?

:white_check_mark: Firmware Compatibility Issues

  • The MultiPlus-II, Ekrano GX, and MPPT firmware versions are all up to date.
  • Is there a known issue with Pylontech UP5000 firmware that affects CAN communication with Victron?

:white_check_mark: Incompatibility between VE.CAN and CAN-BMS

  • The Pylontech manual specifies CAN communication for BMS, but should it be connected to VE.Can or VE.Bus BMS for proper integration?
  • Would an external Victron CAN-BMS be required for compatibility?

:white_check_mark: RJ45 Cable Issues

  • I have fabricated a CAN cable following the Type A pinout, but there is still no communication.
  • Does the Pylontech UP5000 require a shielded CAN cable for proper signal integrity?

:three: DIP Switch Configuration for a Single Pylontech UP5000 Battery

  • I am using only one Pylontech UP5000 battery in the system.
  • What is the correct DIP switch configuration for a single battery setup?

:four: Is a Battery Reset Necessary?

  • Can the Pylontech UP5000 be reset?
  • What is the correct procedure to reset the battery if it is unresponsive?

:five: Correct VE.Configure Settings for Proper Communication

  • What are the recommended VE.Configure 3 settings for this battery?
  • How should the MultiPlus-II and MPPT be configured to ensure stable operation?

:mag: What I Have Tried So Far

:white_check_mark: Checked CAN cabling and confirmed proper wiring:

  • RJ45 CAN Pinout (Type A): Verified correct connection.
  • Ensured proper polarity for CAN-H and CAN-L.

:white_check_mark: Confirmed the battery is powered and operational.

:white_check_mark: Checked settings in Venus OS (Ekrano GX):

  • The battery does not appear in the device list.
  • Tried manual device search without success.

:white_check_mark: Verified MultiPlus-II in split-phase 120° mode with floating phase 2.

:white_check_mark: Checked voltage and frequency of the utility connection.

:white_check_mark: Issue with grid detection and utility power transfer has been resolved.

:pushpin: Key Questions

:one: What am I missing in the setup that prevents the battery from being detected by the Ekrano GX?
:two: Does the Pylontech UP5000 require a termination resistor for CAN communication with Victron?
:three: What is the correct DIP switch configuration for a single Pylontech UP5000 battery?
:four: Do I need to reset the battery? If so, how?
:five: What exact parameters should I use in VE.Configure 3 to ensure proper communication?

Any insights or recommendations to help solve this issue would be highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help! :rocket::battery::zap:

The port speed needs to be set to 500. It comes as default 250.

Yes. That is why they come in the box.

Not necessary to do anything there.

No don’t mess with it.

Nothing for battery communication.
Did you see the guide here for everything else.

How can I change the CAN port speed on the Ekrano GX?

I cannot find the option to adjust this setting in Venus OS on the Ekrano GX.

Where can I change the CAN bus speed in the Ekrano GX settings?
Is there a specific menu or command I need to use?

Thanks in advance for your help! :rocket:

I have this options at VE.Can port 1:

And these, at port 2:

Which one should I use?

Read the manuals of your components and most (or all) of your questions should be solved.

Victron does have very good documentations.
