Exactly. The problem with the Cerbo solution is that the relay is locked on or off. In my case, the genset uses oil pressure to lock out the starter. So on startup it’s not too important. Same with on shutdown. For me, this means that you either have to have momentary closure or just use the Cerbo interface or phone to start/stop the genset and not use any other switches.
If you want proper functionality then you need another device. I wish Victron would re-think their genset relay software. For instance, if you could set the relay to close for 10 seconds on each side, problem solved.
But then, I wish they would alter the software for their inverters too so that you can set the equalization voltage. To me, both are no-brainers but what do I know.
The Cerbo gen start/stop feature is meant to interface to a genset system, not be a genset system. Yes, you need an external control of some sort that conforms to your specific genset, not all are controlled the same way.
How does your setup handle a restart if the genset stalls? Will the starter reengage if fuel is interrupted, or if the oil runs low?
It seems to me that it would be pretty easy for Victron to just alter the software controlling the relay to allow the end user to determine how much time to hold the relay closed. These are, after all, programmable relays. This can be done on the Multiplus unit itself. You can use it to start and stop the genset and have a variable delay.
As for the second part of the question, with respect to stalling etc, that is beyond the scope of the Victron solution. If the Victron is designed to start/stop the genset (and it is) then it should also incorporate the ability to adjust the relays in the process. It’s not rocket science, whoever the software guy is at Victron could easily code this…IF HE WANTED TO.
Just as he could easily code the ability to set the equalization voltage in the Multiplus. They just REFUSE to finish the job rather then write a small piece of code.
The already do that. It’s closed for the duration of the generator run time requested by the Cerbo generator start/stop feature.
Your system requires two relays, some RV systems require 3. Most stationary power genset systems have a high level control that requires just that single enable input. Safety interlocks, stall, crank retry, crank timeout, low oil, etc are handled at a higher level than just a timed relay.
Exactly, that’s why engine control relay is not provided.
I think you miss the simplicity of my point. If you can command the relay to close for an adjustable period of time, it’s all good. It’s that simple.
Same thing with being able to adjust the equalization voltage on a Victron Inverter. It’s just software.
Odd that a company like Victron can’t see the value in just those two simple things. I both cases, the hardware already supports it. They just need to change the code a tiny little bit to make the solution more comprehensive and able to address more customer’s needs.
