Feedback on Off Grid Design

Hello all,

I’m looking for feedback on a proposed off grid set-up.

I’m planing on using 4 Multiplus-II 48/5000/70-95 in a 2x2 configuration to provide split phase 120/240V. The 240V will be needed for a deep well water pump year round and for an air conditioner 3 months of the year.

To minimize zero load power usage, one Multiplus-II 48/5000/70-95 will be ‘on’ to supply the 120V daily needs of the home. A second Multiplus will be turned on when needed with an input relay to supply the 240V for the well pump or the a/c.

The third and fourth Multiplus will be set to charge mode only. If needed, a 20 kW generator will be used at 80-85% load to charge roughly 40 kWh of Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries. This battery capacity should give me 2 days of autonomy with the ability to charge the batteries at a modest 0.5C with the generator.

With 9 kW of solar panels, the generator usage should be kept to a minimum; running only after extended overcast days and for recommended monthly exercising.

Input on this set-up is appreciated. Thank you.

When configuring Victron inverters in an inverter group (i.e. more than one inverter), ALL inverters must be present and working or NONE of the inverters will work. So in the scenarios you outlined, you will be reconfiguring your inverters every time you want to run just one, two, or all four. That will quickly become tiresome.

The standby power draw of the MultiPlus-II is minimal. I suggest you configure them 2x2 as you’ve outlined and leave them all running.

It’s certainly possible to do what you want but it will be a PITA in my opinion.

You might talk to your Victron distributor and get their opinion.

Good luck with your project

Thanks Ed.

I do now remember that from the Victron training video. Once set-up in split phase or 3 phase, all inverters must be ‘on’.

I’ll keep two Multiplus-II ‘on’ for providing split phase 120/240V and the third and fourth Multiplus-II in ‘charge only’ mode.

Down the road if I need more power, I’ll set up #3 and #4 in inverter/charger mode.

The question I’ll ask my distributor will be ‘Can I have two Multiplus-II providing split phase while 2 others are in charge mode only?’

Yes you can, but you cannot connect both groups of Multis (two different VE.buses) to a single GX device. I do not know, however, if you can configure all four Multis in parallel split-phase and turn the phase slaves into charger only mode while the two phase masters are in inverter/charger mode. In about a month we will build a four Multi-II 48/5000 system in parallel split phase for a customer and I can test it then. But that doesn’t help you right now

Ed, what’s the best way to connect with you via e-mail or text? I’m interested in potentially getting a couple of portable PV panels from you. Cheers, Bryan

Hi Bryan. The Victron Community doesn’t allow members to post personally identifying information. If I put my email address here it will just get deleted and I understand why the moderators do that. However, you can find our email address on our website. You can use a search engine to find Off-Grid Power Systems in Ohio. Thanks.

Ok, understand. I will contact you via your website.

Cheers,
