Feedback for user when creating a can bus between two Inverter RS

Hi!

I try to set up 2 pcs of Inverter RS 48/6000 in single phase parallel configuration.

What I did so far:

  • installing and testing both Inverters in standalone mode
  • adding one canbus terminator for each inverter and connecting them with an ethernet cable
  • making the necessary steps for parallel setup as described in the users manual (4.6. Parallel programming): 4. Configuration

What I would expect to see:
any kind of feedback (either in the app or on the units display) which shows that the units are successfully communicate via canbus and that the AC outputs are synchronised.

Because I had no clues if the units are really synchronised, I did not interconnect the two AC outputs so far. I measured the voltage between the two AC Live outputs:
with the DMM in AC mode it measured 4.7V, in DC mode it measured 0.0V.

This 4.7V AC difference is normal?
How can I know if the units outputs are synched (I do not have my scope at hand, so any other method to check)?

Thanks!

You may need to interconnect the two AC outputs because the measuring of the AC sine wave parameters is based on tapping on the AC line.
Through CAN I believe is exchanged only basic data and not the output waveforms that need to be synced.

Hi I have two setup like this and they work fine.

They ideally need to be manufactured at or about the same time, mine are about 10 months apart, there is a small difference in output (AC Watts) at low output but when they ramp up to a kilowatt or more the watts output are within 10w.

One thing to remember the two positive/negative output (AC) wires from the inverters all need to be exactly the same length and correct type of wire.

What exactly are you asking?

Thanks for the answers!

I just would like to be sure the 2 sine waves are synched before I connect our whole property with all the electronics to the inverters output… If - for any reason - the can bus is not working (defective cable, wrong configuration, firmware issues etc) and the outputs are not in sync, it could cause very expensive damage to the household electronics devices.

I do not know, maybe I’m just paranoic, but I would expect to see a confirmation in the app that “yeah, the inverters see each other, can bus is up, outputs are synched, whatever”.

Yep, they are both HQ2233, so I think that is fine. Also the AC wires are about the same length, same type etc, 10mm2, so this is ok.

Do you also have 2 inverters in parallel? Can you send me a screenshot about the “system” menu in the app? Or can you check what I posted is correct?

Thanks!

Don’t see any reason why not, but you can always do a simple test.

Connect up as you are going to but just put a a 1kw load on them (with nothing else attached) and see what’s reported in the app.

All ok but i would make sure the outputs wire’s are as close as possible to being the same lengths.

Here is a screen shot, yes i have two in parallel.

This is what I did, but first measured the voltage with my multimeter (AC and DC) and also the frequency, all was at nominal values.

The load difference between the 2 inverters is small, at 150W it is about 6W difference, at higher loads it is non significant.

The only clue in the app that communication is working between the 2 units is, that on the Status tab / Solar it shows the “Network total power”, which was correct.

Otherwise I could not find anything else which reflects the status of the CAN bus… maybe something to implement in the app, @guystewart ?

Thank you for the help @alexpescaru , @nesswill !

Hi i understand.

This is from the manual.

System Instance

Units with the same instance number work together on the AC side.

Changing the System instance setting allows multiple groups of Inverters to be on the same VE.Can bus, but not synchronised, and segmented into different AC outputs, without interference.

Something like this maybe.

But a bit more detail would be nice i agree.
