I have 3 Orion XS 12/12 50 units. 2 are paralleled. For this discussion I have two separate power sources going on. The single and parallel Orions are rarely powered at the same time.
The DVCC control just looks at the Orion XS’s Output Current setting to spread the DVCC max current across all 3 Orions. It should at least look at State and assume the Orion’s Output Current is zero (0) when the State of the unit is OFF.
In my case it’s either “OFF” or “EXTERNAL CONTROL”.
The dual Orion’s connect to a AC powered 100A DC power supply – that I power via my generator.
The single Orion connects to either the AUX wire of the trailer pigtail or an Anderson connector – switch controlled – where I have an Anderson connector on my vehicle’s battery.
I also have a MPPT 100/50 solar charger.
All Victron units connect (via USB) to the Ekranos.
Not taking the ON/OFF State into account of the Orions totally messes up how the DVCC logic “distributes” the max current output of each Orion unit. And hence, I have to fiddle, on my cell phone, with the output current setting of each Orion that’s OFF. It’s a pain in the neck and is non-obvious to the casual user.
My least desirable solution is to add a power relay to the ground wire of each of the Orion units that will only turn on the ground for that Orion if it has power on it’s Input – so that the Orion is effective taken “off line” such that the Ekranos unit doesn’t see the Orion and won’t include it in the DVCC logic.
I’d also need to add a bypass switch so I can force all the Orions online so that I can configure them even if they don’t have Input power.
All this is a lot of effort when compared to a rather minor software change.
Being able to group Orions – since they have separate power sources – in the Ekranos unit and have the DVCC manage the max current as sets might be nice, but for my use case it would be overkill since it would be very rare that I would have all 3 Orion’s running at the same time – pushing 150 ADC into my 460Ah battery.
