EasySolar-II GX 48/3000 - MPPT disappearing from GX unit

We have had a problematic install with an EasySolar-II GX (48/3000 if that’s important).

The issue is the MPPT just “disappears” from the system. Initially, we suspected the SmartSolar 250/70 itself, and had that replaced. This changed nothing

That left the internal VE.Direct cable and the GX unit itself. The installer of the system suggested the customer might be happier with a whole new EasySolar-II GX.

So, I grabbed a new one out of stock, programmed it …and… the MPPT disappeared from the GX unit.

One system with this behaviour I’d put down to cabling, two systems having the same issue is more likely a firmware issue?

Rebooting the GX unit itself seems to make the MPPT come back.
Also, using the external VE.Direct connector seems to make it come back too - but I’m not sure if it is just “resetting” the problem too.

I rolled back the customer’s GX firmware to v3.21, but this also “lost” the MPPT again after about 48 hours of running. So if it’s a firmware issue, it’s older than that.

@Dean_Commodore
Have you contacted your local dealer for support? This is a not an ask Victron site so ideally it needs to pass into the official channels so if there is a bigger issue it is documented and dealt with.
Or the support page is another way see the guidelines here for more directions.

We are the local Victron dealer. That’s why I mention “So, I grabbed a new one out of stock”

Victron doesn’t have a “bug report” facility other than raising it to level 3 support and maybe getting a reply (I’m sure they’re as busy as we are).

So, hive mind it is - it’s often quicker than the “official” channels such as they are.

I keep stock and I’m not a dealer. So there is that.

If you are a dealer and there is a known issue i do know they send out memos to that effect.

And all the usual red wire remotes have been checked? That was an issue a while ago and does affect the on state.

hi dean , we also have some problems with the easy solar units …
without any error logs or alarms ac output gets disconnected
3 units so far
all offgrid so very anoying and always have a reply yes maybe its the cabling or loose connection
regards birdy

hi lx wich usual redwire ? cant open the link …

You can add a temporary loop to (the remote on off) test.

Hi

I have three easysolar 2 48/3000 with the same problem. I also tried everything you did, and I’ve seen that only unplungging and replugging the vedirect cable is enough to reset the connection and have it working again. But I agree, the simplest way is to reboot the GX.

No matter wich venus version or mppt firmware they are running, so it seems to me it’s an hardware related problem, for some reason the serial port of the vedirect stops working in the GX card at some random moments.
When the connection is back (or when looked at with victronConnect), mppt has always the “error 67 : no bms connection” (because they are on pylontech batteries)

The problem is pretty rare, sometimes does not shows up from monthes or years, and come again for no reason, when nothing else changed.

It would be great if there was some alarm mechanism on VRM that could be set up when a device disappears from the system, so it’s easy enough to reboot the GX remotely. But now we can be aware of this only when battery low alarms triggers.

Why not set the auto reboot on lost connection setting on the GX?

Because this will not work. VRM connection is not lost, only the vedirect connection between the mppt and the GX board.

There is no system in the GX device made to trigger an action or alarm on hardware changes

You could use node red and either query vrm or test against a local node, then send yourself a whatsapp/tweet or whatever as an alert. Bit of work but doable.

Thank you all for the replies.
Rebooting the GX unit fixes the problem - full communication is restored.
I have a NodeRED workaround:

More info on the original issue, immediately after the GX reboot, the MPPT then throws error #67.
Which I suspect means it was alive and noticed the battery had gone missing.
I’ll try and pin down the timing but I believe that means the MPPT was running while “gone”.
Of course, I could probably just “unmanage” the batteries, but Pylontech would not like that.

And again - why I posted - two identical units (HQ2025… & HQ2022…) behaving the same. One unfortunately installed at a remote customer’s location. One, fortunately, on my desk. I can confirm this is not the cabling issue. Ran out of time to diagnose any further but will soon have the remote unit back as the customer no longer trusts the EasySolar-II GX.
