DESS seems to be broken... not charging the battery

Since a few weeks ago, DESS has stoppede charging the battery.

There is a huge price difference between day and evening, but no power is put to the battery… and the battery remains at 20 %SOC

Same problem yesterday… and we always have a huge price difference between mid day and evening.
Acting like there is no battery at all.

I notice that you are running quite an outdated beta Venus firmware ( v3.60~72). Before diving deeper into it and discovering that the cause has already been fixed in a newer Venus version. Can you update to either the latest beta or to 3.73?

I have updated to 3.73
And I changed the minimum SOC from 20 to 30, in a try to make it wake up… I have changed back to 20
Right now it has charged to 40% and still going.

But it seems like it will not charge much more than 55 %
Maybe it’s best to wait until tomorrow and see if the problem persist.

Just ping me tomorrow, that will do. I do notice some strange things that I can’t directly explain. Leaving it running as is until then will make it easier to troubleshoot and confirm strange behaviour.

And I have noted the vrm id already, no need to post it.

Just had a closer look at your configuration with my colleagues and we noticed some things that explains the behaviour of the system.

First of all you have a battery to grid restriction set. This results in the system not being able to sell the generated PV at a later moment (yielding more money).

I don’t know if it isn’t allowed because of Danish law or if that is something you are allowed to decide. German users also need to set that restriction; in other parts of Europe it is allowed to sell from battery.

Then you have your system running in Trade mode. Which makes it really hard for the system to come up with the best decisions from the financial perspective. Because of the battery-to-grid restriction it can’t store the PV yield in the battery for later selling. It can only use the battery for consumption needs and sell PV directly. I will only try to store energy in the battery to cover your forecasted overnight consumption needs and only if it is economically cheaper than buying from grid directly.

So if you need the battery-to-grid restriction active, the trade mode doesn’t make much sense. It is better to switch the system to green mode, which aim is to use own generated energy as much as possible and only feed back excess PV energy.

Makes perfectly sense… I’ll change that to “No”… but, I just found something else.
I keep having both Low and High voltage alerts… and this graph from 2 weeks back, tells me that the battery is way out of balance.
3 x SOK SK48v100 - (15 Kwh total)
Just a small draw of 5 A pulls the voltages way down. So, I have set “Keep batteries charged”… set a limit of 40 A charge and I will let it be for at least 2 days if not more, till I see it stabilize.
Then continue on this topic :sweat_smile:
And, maybe this unbalance might have impact on DESS :thinking:

If your BMS supports it, you can draw minimum and maximum cell voltage in advanced graph.
I balance until diff is 5mV.

this is completely normal for LiFePo-Cells.

They almost always have ~3.36V, so seeing voltage “break down” to ~ 53,76 on a 16-cell battery after the slightest discharge is completely normal.

As Bjorn said, looking at the Min/Max Cell-Voltage while it reports 100% Soc would be a better indicator for the battery balancing state.

Other than that, this does not impact DESS, unless the battery itself actively limits charging / discharging.

It’s 3 x SOK 5 kwh rack batteries so must be 48 cells.

But, other things suggest it is way out of balance… like constantly reporting High or Low cell voltage:

Yesterday it stopped at 83 % SOC… and had really small spikes of 5 - 10 A of charge like every now and then… suggesting the BMS’s are doing their thing.
Only sitting around 55.92 to 55.95 volt.

And today, the Volt / A graph looks like this… suddenly going from 83 to 99 % SOC and 56.70 V… and then it has been falling slowly even since. Also suggesting the BMS’s are working on something.

So I’ll keep on “Keep batteries charged” of some days let the BMS’s in those SOK rack batteries do their thing. Surely does not have impact on DESS, but this is more important to get fixed first :slight_smile:

I’m 400 km away from the system… not even my system anymore, cause I sold the house last fall. I’m just keeping an eye on it for the new owners :slight_smile:
But soon I’ll be building a new and way bigger Victron system in my new house… can’t wait :smiley:

That also happens from time to time, after longer periods of not reaching 100% or fluctuating charge / Discharge Behaviour. Reason is, the BMS can’t rely on voltage to determine the Soc - it counts current, and that may derail over time.

Only when reaching a certain cellvoltage that counter is reset, any may cause a jump from 80 to close to 100%, or sometimes sitting at ~ 80% for extrem long time.

Yet this is just the internal Current-Counter “beeing off”, not necessarily related to cell imbalance. But to figure out that, you would need to look at the min/max cell voltage figures if your BMS is reporting them.

55.95V is quite high.
The online manual states even more extrem values fro 100% SOC and protect.

  • Charge voltage: 57.6V → 3.6V/cell
  • Cell over voltage protect: 3.7V
  • Pack over voltage protect: 58.2V (3.6375V/cell)

According to the screenshots and the used firmware tools, the BMS could be a PACE 200 I or smaller variant, I have in my GobelPower GS-SR1-PC200.

You can download the firmware tools from the link above.
Maybe you can figure out the manfacture password for the tool. Maybe that for GobelPower works. Google for it.

If possible set the BMS protocoal to “Victron”. It’s seems to be on Pylontech.

On LFPs the SOC-voltage-curve is nearly flat until 3,4 volts. Starting with 3.4V/cell, the voltage will raise significatnly without storing much energy. If possible your can adjust the BMS to set 100% SOC on safe 3.45V/cell without lossing much energy. On the other hand you get a lot of safety maring until 3.65V/cell which is absolute upper limit per cell. You might nieed that margin if cells are not balanced and the balancer cannot keep up with charge current.
By setting appropiate and safe values, you will get rid of warning because cells will not overshoot. I am not talking about suppressing warnings!

I recommend to lower the full pack charged voltage, as well as all warn and protect voltages.
My settings are:

  • charge voltage: 55.2V (3.45V/cell) defines 100% SOC, MP2 will charge with +0.4V
  • cell OV protect: 3.60V
  • cell OV warn: 3.55V
  • pack OV protect: 57.12V (3.57V/cell)
  • pack OV warn: 56.48 (3.53V/cell)

Pls. review this post in another forum. The founder of “Current Connected” seem to provide the software. But i am a littel confues they recommend Pylontech protocol and those high values w/o safety marging…
