Connecting Orion XS: ve.direct to Cerbo or to SmartBMS?

I have both a Cerbo GX and a Smart BMS in my system. I have dual Orion XS devices and am wondering how to connect them. Should I just connect the Orion’s remote H signal to the Smart BMS ATC? Or should I connect the Orion to the Cerbo GX using the VE.direct cable? Or both?

The documentation for the Orion is a little unclear. It shows a ve.direct cable connected to a computer in the ‘charger mode’, but doesn’t mention it anywhere else in that document, and in section 3.9 (f) it shows to use the remote H to the BMS. The Cerbo GX manual doesn’t mention the Orions as a device, but does call out MPPT chargers.

Since there are only 3 connections and I have two MPPTs and 2 Orions, I am leaning towards there being no VE.Direct connection between the Orions and the Cerbo and only to use the ATC signal high from the BMS to the Orion’s remote H.

First off, please tell us which BMS you have as there are several with Smart in the name.

Secondly, you can get VE Direct to USB cables so you can connect more devices to the Cerbo, so regardless of the ATC I would connect the Orions to the Cerbo.

If it is a Lynx BMS then you connect the Orions by VE direct and they will be managed by the BMS and Cerbo the same as an MPPT, see the Lynx manual. No need for ATC wires.

If it is a Smart 12/100 or Smart 12/200 then you need to wire ATC to the Orions the same as an MPPT, see the appropriate manual.

It is a Lynx Smart BMS 500

As per above, connect to the Cerbo using VE direct to USB for one MPPT or Orion, tje other 3 on VE direct ports, the Lymx BMS will automatically enable DVCC and control all 4 chargers plus the inverter/ charger should you have one. Documentation is trying to catch up, they hook up the same as solar.
