Can we have firmware changelogs as PDF instead of .docx?

Can we have firmware changelogs as PDF instead of .docx ?
So we could read them with our browser instead of using another bloated software.

on new topics tag selecting is annoying counterintuitive with new board software

Can you inform us, wat are de reasons for this to want this ?

.docx is a microsoft data format. Why is somene outthere to use this as an exchange data format???
.pdf is portable;-)
And normaly no one needs to know the creators login name. When it’s created and so on…

So docx is a file format which should never leave any company. (By using microsoft tools it’s left the company before you know it;-))

That is why

Docx is a format everyone can read and use.

Using personal aversion against MS to justify it’s a bad file format doesn’t seem reasonable to me.

Changelogs are a very “active” document, maintained by a lot of people. Having everyone going through the extra need of convert it to pdf upon every change, while still needing to maintain the docx somewhere is just work-overhead, i’d say.

distributing .docx is kind of insane… who on earth does such a thing ? Obviously this should be *.pdf or *.txt

one reason its more convenient to use a browser for reading, should be obvious

another reason, i do not work for the company and do not maintain the changelog, i am just a customer who need to know what have changed, by the way, published documents aren’t supposed to be edited/changed

converting .docx to pdf isn’t rocket science anymore, just one click on a button

a Open standard format is always better than a microsoft product.

PDF, or browserbased HTML or on github are fine.

Ahh I was now making a post asking exactly this!

Please do it in PDF, I don’t have an office subscription to read this. Until I’m able to read it, my evsc will be stuck on an older firmware :frowning:

another reason is not have to have a office subscription. Crazy ehh but not everyone have them…

If everyone pay a subscription. This should be an open format.

Just download any free docx viewer. There are plenty of them, you don’t need a full office license, for example: Doc Viewer - Free download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store

Why on earth should someone clutter the computer with additional software, when the PDF format is read natively by any decent web browser which generally comes by default with the OS?

Some people don’t seem to understand this. One shouldn’t need to have unknown / untrusted software to read release notes.

I also understand the argument

Maybe it’s time to start some internal discussions and start some other web formats.
A wiki is a great option. Light, cheap and accessible by anyone with the right rights.
There are others of course.

I understand the Idea, but I’m pretty indifferent about it, so to say
I will check if there’s room for a discussion, or if that has already been discussed earlier.

Got say it makes perfect sense to be a PDF, its pretty much the norm these days

As for editing, surely your not publishing the documents until they are finalised? Then it’s a simple case of print to pdf and save it to the published folder, or automate it.

Hi,

This has been requested before, and the answer I got then was that R&D engineers who maintain those change logs are not going to be spending any time changing it to something else.
There is some back end workflow now that is working, and moving to something else was not a priority.

Now the much better news is that there has been a new system under development to improve firmware updates across the board. It’s not been announced so I won’t go into any more details, but I made sure to advocate for the release notes to be better integrated.

So improvements coming, but not exactly in the way you request.
