BMS control of secondary battery bank charger

On my Sailboat I have a Lynx smart bms 500 to look after my house bank of Lithium batteries.
The bow thruster battery bank is not lithium, it’s just two lead acids. Up until recently the thruster batteries were charged from an alternator on the engine, but recently, I installed an Orion XS charger to charge the thruster batteries from my house batteries - taking the alternator out of the equation.
The Orion is connected to my Cerbo via ve.direct - and I think that because of this ve.direct link, the BMS has decided that it should also be controlling the lead acid batteries.
The upshot of this is that on my screen, the Orion’s charging efforts are shown as Alternator amps flowing INTO the house battery bank
Is ve.direct always going to cause the BMS to poke its nose in my bow thruster’s business?
Any insights or useful info would be gratefully accepted.
Thanks.

Yes, because the assumption would be the orion/alternator is charging the house bank.

A sort of work around is a shunt connected to the cerbo and that controls the orion and you can still see the power flow.

The newly released firmware V3.60 has modifications in it to allow the Orion XS to be treated as a load on the system not a charger. Therefore, you should consider loading V3.60 and performing this check.

What I do not know is if DVCC turns this off if the BMS stops discharging, you may want to connect the ATD from the BMS to the remote pins. However, of course if the contactor opens then this will stop the Orion charging the bow thruster batteries.

If you do not want to upgrade to V3.60 then the simple workaround is to remove the VE direct cable.

Nice one - thanks :+1:

Yes - I’ve removed the cable (it was a real bugger to chase it through the bilge the connect it in the first place though), and yes, I’ll have a go at updating the firmware. Many thanks for your response :+1:

Nice. New it was in the works. But was being lazy about checking if it was released. Thanks @pwfarnell.

If you update, pop the VE Direct back on and update the setting highlighted and see how it goes. The people who tested this during beta phase said that it successfully resolved this issue.
