I just bought a Bluesolar mppt 100/20 controller to charge a LifePo4 deep cycle battery. I saw at the information it could charge it but Im not sure if I have to do some configuration on the Controller as I just saw a post saying I would need an extra device. Can anyone help?
Since the BlueSolar version doesn’t have bluetooth to interface to the VictronConnect app for configuration like the SmartSolar version does, you can use a VE.Direct USB Interface to connect to a PC or Mac running VictronConnect, or a VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart Dongle to add bluetooth functionality so that you can connect and configure via the VictronConnect app on your phone:
So if I just connect it normally without that configuration, it wont charge the battery or it would damage it?
It’ll certainly charge the battery, but probably not with the charge profile that the battery wants to see; default profile is, if I recall correctly (though confirm with the user manual) AGM which most likely wouldn’t cause damage but may cause BMS shutdown under certain conditions or other undesired effects.
It doesnt have BMS, is an Epcom Deep cycle, just like the Agm batteries design
If it’s LiFePO4 as you say, it either 100% absolutely does have one or it 100% absolutely needs one - without exception. LFP batteries must have BMSs.
If it’s this, which is the only Epcom LFP battery I see on their site, it does have a BMS built in; you can download the spec sheet and charging requirements and other information directly there: https://www.epcom.net/product/LI10012S-EPCOM-POWERLINE-197051.html
Understood. So I can buy 1 VE DIRECT DONGLE BLUETOOTH and use it for this and future installations with Victron right?
Yes the Bluetooth dongle works with many victron products.
I have a BMV702, blue solar 100/20 and a blue solar 100/50 and only one dongle, I just plug the dongle into the device’s VE.direct port do the settings and plug into the next device and rinse and repeat
