That is exactly the purpose for changing to buck. The transformer will stop current flow if the voltage is not in the “good” ranges.
Let’s assume the input is 130V. That would normally get boosted to about 135V, which is way too high for 120V devices (by standards). If you switch to buck, 130V becomes 125 which is actually in spec, but still on the high side.
These instructions will prevent the problem you are seeing and you will be back in business.
