Android Victron connect no stored data

Hello,

I no longer can get the stored date for any of my devices using Android VictronConnect.

Android v15

Samsung Galaxy A16 5G

VictronConnect v6.21

Devices

(1) BMV-712 Smart HQ20396S7LU

(1) SmartBatterySense HQ21022N9IR

(2) SmartSolar MPPT 150/70 HQ20498R3VP, HQ2049Y5HRU

(2) SmartSolar MPPT 150/100 HQ2140R23UN, HQ2140UF6PH

Any help would be appreciated,

Guy Bradley

Hi Guy,

Can you please create a service report after connecting to the BMV and post that here? That might give us a clue and what could be the problem.

With kind regards,
Thiemo van Engelen

Thank you Thiemo,

I can find create service report in VictronConnect by going into the menu but when I connect to the BMV there is no create service report. Do mean for me to create a service report from VictronConnect at the device list?

Thanks

Hi Thiemo,

I sent it via VictronConnect. I hope that is right.

Thanks,
Guy Bradley

Hi Guy,

We received the file and will take a look on what can be the problem.

Kind regards,
Thiemo

Hi Guy,

In the service report we see that not all devices contain the latest firmware for the internal dongle. Can you please update the internal dongles first and see it that already helps as the new firmware does contain some fixes for the stored data.

Regards,
Thiemo

Hi Thiemo,

I have more than one email address with Google. I got a new phone and I can’t get it to connect with the gneedlebsoc address so I used my primary address gbradleyviper@gmail.com. Daniel got the email and told me the stored data file on all devices were corrupt. He said to clear the stored data on each device. I did that and now the stored data works on all devices. Great.

It’s weird that the corruption only happened to the (5) devices in the house but not to the (2) devices in my outside shop. Oh well. Whenever I look at the stored data, I only go back a couple of days. Therefore losing a whole month does not matter. I can’t see scrolling threw a whole month. That would drive me crazier than I already am.

Due to a previous problem I had with the (4) MPPT’s in the house, I refuse to update them. They work great at the rev they are at. There is a service report that you created for that incident if you need to refresh.

The system is working great. That’s all that matters. Now, if I could just get the clouds to stay away. They seem to be drawn to be between the sun and the panels a lot.

Thanks for your and Daniels help,

Guy Bradley

Hi Guy,
At which version are they at the moment and working OK?
And are you willing to tell what kind of problem did you had with them?
I’m at the point of using a few MPPTs and I want them to be released on the field without problems.
Thanks

Hi Alex,

This is what I have and the last version where none of them have an issue.

(Master) SmartSolar (MPPT 150/70)
(Slave) SmartSolar (MPPT 150/70)
(Slave) SmartSolar (MPPT 150/100)
(Slave) SmartSolar (MPPT 150/100)

I tried their latest version and it had problems, Therefore I downgraded back on 6/9/2024 and have not changed them since.
On 6/9/2024 I downgraded all 4 charge controller SmartSolar Charger firmware to v3.13
On 6/9/2024 I downgraded all 4 charge controller SmartSolar Bluetooth firmware to v2.44

Both the Charger firmware and the Bluetooth firmware had to be downgraded. I tried just the firmware and that did not fix the issue until I downgraded the Bluetooth firmware as well.

The problem started after the charge controllers went through Bulk, Absorption and then into Float. If a cloud came between the panels and the sun. Due to the load at the current time, the system would go from Float into Bulk. Once the cloud would move out of the way and the panels would have direct sun, randomly some of the charge controllers would stay in Float while the others would stay in Bulk. The CC’s in bulk would charge the batteries trying to get them back into Float while the CC’s in Float would provide no charge at all. Not helping the CC’s in Bulk get to the Float state.

With SmartSolar Charger firmware to v3.13 and SmartSolar Bluetooth firmware to v2.44 all 4 CC’s do not have this problem if the system goes into Bulk due to a cloud. They all go into the Bulk state and when the panels get full sun, all CC’s work together to get the system back into Float and they do that very fast depending on the load from the inverters.

I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me.

Thanks,

Guy Bradley

Thanks a lot for the detailed info and explanation. :+1:

Hi @gbradleyviper

Do you also have the VE.Can MPPTs connected via VE.Can or is everything only connected via VE.Smart Networking? And are all devices you mention added to this network?

With kind regards,
Thiemo van Engelen

Hi Thiemo,

Everything is only connected via VE.Smart Networking. All devices: BMV-712, SmartBatterySense, (2) MPPT 150/70 and (2) MPPT VE.Can 150/100 are on the VE.Smart Networking. I do not have any devices on the VE.Can Network.

The corrupt data might have been caused by me purchasing a new Samsung phone. Installing VictronConnect. Connecting all components to the phone. It didn’t happen the first day. It happened the second day. First connection, initial connection was fine. Second connection, next day, VictronConnect would not download the stored data for these devices: BMV-712, (2) MPPT 150/70 and (2) MPPT VE.Can 150/100.

The SmartBatterySense stored data did not get corrupted because I hardly ever connect to it on a daily basis to view its stored data. I just look at the temp via the main screen on victronConnect.

I have a question. When viewing the main screen on VictronConnect. Why does VictronConnect do a refresh after a couple of minutes and then the “No Devices Found” message is presented with no devices visible. I then have to either press the refresh button or if I wait long enough, the screen refreshes and I can see all of the components.

Have a nice day,

Guy Bradley

Hi Guy.

Thank you for the information. This gives us some more insight in what could be happening with the controllers.

About the stored trends. There was a problem with corruption and reboots / power cycles of the internal BLE dongle. These should be solved with the latest BLE dongle firmware. We are unaware of any problem that can be causes by switching to a new phone.

Then the question about the device list. What do you mean with a refresh?
As long as the main page is visible, BLE scanning should be active and devices should not just disappear. It could be that on your phone for some reason the BLE scanning is terminated, perhaps to limit power usage.

Thiemo van Engelen

Thank you Thiemo,

Maybe it is Android. I have had this system for four years and have gone through a few phones. They all did the same thing. After a couple of minutes the main page devices would just disappear. Leave VictronConnect alone and after lets say 5 minutes, the main page would automatically refresh and the devices would come back. For a couple of minutes and then disappear again. Vicious cycle.

Oh well.

Thank you for letting me know…

Guy Bradley

Hi Guy,

Regarding the SmartSolar: Are you willing to update just the MPPT part to check whether the problem in your installation is with the SmartSolar part or with the dongle part?

Then VictronConnect: I was able to reproduce the issue but still have to investigate what the underlying cause is. The reason they disappear is that we are not getting any BLE scanning data for a while and then after a while VictronConnect assumes they are gone. We can probably do something about this.

With kind regards,
Thiemo van Engelen

Hello Thiemo,

The last time I did the downgrade I first did the SmartSolar upgrade and that did not fix the issue. Then I downgraded the dongle part and that fixed the problem. That got me thinking that the dongle might be the problem but I never said anything.

I guess I could try upgrading the SmartSolar part only if you think that the units will still work correctly.

That’s good news about being able to add some code to VictronConnect to correct the issue I am having. I like watching all 4 MPPT’s at once. It actually is helpful. The other day the primary MPPT breaker to the batteries tripped and I was able to spot it quickly and reset the switch. This switch has done this before and is about to be replaced. I happened to go onto my vendor’s web site and they had better breakers that I have for the second upgrade I performed 3 years ago. The switches were on sale and I bought 4 of them. I have 6 solar pole mounts, 4 panels each, and 2 days ago I had to jack up 2 of them to tap the hub bolt threads. The bolts got stripped and fortunately the nuts in the hubs just needed tapping to refresh the threads. I also added a third bank of batteries several months ago. I can now enjoy more amp hours. Which brings me to another question.

Using VictronConnect on my Samsung Android phone, how come the BMV-712 Smart doesn’t store Consumed Amp Hour data? When I select the drop down on the Trends page, there is no stored data, only current data.

Thanks for your help,

Guy Bradley

Hello Guy,

We cannot guarantee that it will still work correctly and not show the same behavior as before as we are not sure where the problem lies. But given your description above that when downgrading, only downgrading the MPPT did not help and downgrading the dongle then did work, the most likely suspect is the dongle.

The amount of storage in the dongle is limited so we had to make choices on what to store and what not. The unfortunate thing is indeed that now the connected trend items do not match the stored items.

Thiemo van Engelen

Hi Thiemo,

Makes sense. Thank you.
