Android GX Display provisioning blocked by Google Play Protect on Lenovo Tab One 8.7 (TB305FU)

Hello,

I am trying to install the Android GX Display on 2 brand-new Lenovo Tab One 8.7 (TB305FU) using the official QR-code provisioning procedure described in the Victron documentation. The devices were bought for this purpose specifically.

Environment

  • Cerbo GX
  • Venus OS v3.73
  • Tablet: Lenovo Tab One 8.7 (TB305FU)
  • Android 14 (factory version)
  • Official Victron Android GX Display QR code:
    Android GX WiFi Display

Installation procedure

I followed the official procedure exactly:

  1. Powered on the tablet for the first time.
  2. Did not press “Start”.
  3. Tapped six times on the Welcome screen.
  4. Scanned the official Victron QR code.
  5. Connected to Wi-Fi.
  6. The device downloaded the required components successfully.

The provisioning then continued normally through the following screens:

  • “This Lenovo Tab One belongs to your organisation”
  • “Getting ready for work setup”

At the very end of the provisioning process, Google Play Protect displays the following message:

“App blocked to protect your device” gxDisplay

The popup only offers:

  • Got it
  • How Play Protect works

There is no option such as “Install anyway” or “More details”.

At that point, the provisioning stops and the Android GX Display cannot be installed.

Additional information

  • The tablet was brand new and had never been configured.
  • No Google account was added.
  • The device was in its factory state when provisioning started.
  • The QR code used is the official one from the Victron documentation.
  • The download phase completes successfully; the failure only occurs when Google Play Protect blocks the application.

Questions

  • Has anyone successfully provisioned a Lenovo Tab One 8.7 (TB305FU) with Android 14 using the QR-code method?
  • Is this a known Google Play Protect issue?
  • Is there an updated Device Policy Controller (DPC) or provisioning package that resolves this problem?
  • The APK install (cf #8 in Manual) has not been tested yet, but the kiosk version suits better my needs.

Any help or confirmation would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi, acknowledge with got it. Proceed if possible

Try to uncheck the box in the security (allow installation from downloads or the browser).

Google prepares main changes in September already now (Android is planned to be altered to a system like apple. App-Programmer have to be registered and pay fees, and so on). Look for informations in the internet, there are many campaigns against that (look at F-droid and other sites for more informations)

Thanks Karl for your quick answer.

Maybe I was not clear enough but it is impossible to force anything by unchecking a security checkbox. To use the QR code method, you must be in factory reset mode (this will undo any type of allowance you could have set in Google Play Protect).

As I understood, the problem, it seems your second info is the exact explanation to my problem. The only solution would be Victron making a new installation package with this “new” security feature… Xssing fingers.

You can switch off scan apps with play protect off from the play store.

I have an older Lenovo tab that had a similar issue.
Just installed the apk after.

Still nobody with a nice solution to be able to use the Kiosk version?
