AGM battery overcharged by Blue Smart 12/30 230 charger

Hello,

We are in Spain and last night used shore power to charge our battery (Victron AGM Super Cycle 12V/170Ah) via our Blue Smart 12/30 230 charger. This morning, the battery was very hot and was still charging at 14.4V in bulk mode, despite showing a 100% state of charge (the charger is connected to the network with a BMV-712 monitor). Charging via the solar panel through the SmartSolar MPPT works fine (float charging rather than bulk). Our only loads are small consumers; we do not have an inverter or anything similar.

The battery voltage did not exceed 14.4V during the night. What could be causing the battery to get hot? Is the battery still safe to use?

If you are using AGM batteries in hot climates you need temperature compensation enabled or manually reduce the absorption voltage. AGM batteries when they are warm have a lower resistance so allow more amps to flow so they may not reach the trigger point to go to float. Above 25degC the charging voltage must be reduced. Setting a maximum absorption time can also help.
