Good morning
It seems I made a mistake joining this forum.
I thought it would assist beginners seeing as Victron appears to have such a good name.
I will withdraw.
Thank you for you reply.
It says a lot.
No cause
But you should understand a bit of sarcasm when you’re travelling in the public domain, right ?
Did I offend someone … No … So
Without any information … except that it is a small yacht … ???
Honestly … what do you want to hear?
You need to tell use how much current you are using to know what wire size to use.
Hi there
Thanks for your reply, I apprecite it. It seems that in order to learn, it is necessary to be abused first, based on the responses that I received from Steffan Netrange.
Please direct me to the Victron literature which tells someone how to go about determining the wire size. I looked at the BMV712 manual (the installation section) and the BMV712 data sheet and did not find it in either document. I may have missed it. Thank you.
There is a Victron Publication, “Wiring Unlimited”, linked below that is a useful read for beginners.
Section 4.1 discusses cable size. Cable size is typically determined by the voltage drop as explained in that chapter, which is a function of both cable length AND current and this gives you a table. Often, the cable will be larger than the maximum current rating of the cable. Examples of maximum current rating can be found as linked below. You can also download the Victron Toolkit app onto your phone as that has a cable voltage drop calculator. There are others on line.
This is why it is not in the BMV manual, because it does not depend on the BMV.
Example, my boat has max draw of 300A at 12V with 3m cable run, I use 95mm² even though this is rated for 500A max.
Hi there
Thank you.
I have downloaded the wiring unlimited publication.
I have also located the voltage drop calculator on the 12 Volt Planet website.
Much appreciated.
Yes, if you have a problem, you’ll get all the help possible.
But we are not the replacement of a manual, you’ll need to read them yourself.
