Wireless Display Alternate Connections to GX?

Hi, I have my GX device (RPi3+) in an RV connected to a Multiplus, MPPT, and SmartShunt, and am watching the Wireless display development with great interest as I have long wanted to have a display in the RV but am unable to run a wire to a suitable location close enough to the RPi.

Currently the only time my GX is connected to a LAN is when I’m not using my RV and it’s parked in my driveway and is close to my home WiFi. When we’re out using it there is no router or LAN - and this is exactly when I’d be depending on the wireless display!

I’d imagine that my use case is not unique, with all the RV and boat owners using Victron equipment. Does this mean that we’d need to install an AP in our vehicles so the wireless display can network with the GX? Or is there any roadmap to allow the wireless connection over Bluetooth or WiFi Direct - when the home WiFi is inaccessible?

You can setup AP on the RPi itself using the built in Broadcom chip. It can even co-exist with the WiFi client connecting to another WiFi network. There are tutorials on the net for that but I can post my instructions if you are interested. That way the RPi can connect to a known WiFi network, talk to Victron stuff over cable(s) and provide AP for in car monitoring.

Yes please, this sounds like an ideal solution!

Hi are you still able to post your instructions?

If you can get @enodev’s solution of just using the RPi to create an AP, that would be ideal. I have the same use case as you and set up this little router and love it. The nice thing is that all devices in my RV stay connected to that router, and when I pull into an RV park I can just connect the router to their AP and all of the devices get internet. But when I’m disconnected, there’s still a LAN in the RV and I can even connect to it from my phone in my towing vehicle and be on the same network. All of that would be true if you use the RPi AP point strategy too, so try that first. Good luck.
