Why does the system still manipulate the different power flows when Dess is off?

The last days we are experiencing very little sunshine and high (dynamic) prices. To prevent the system from selling (as it forecasts way too much sun) we jusr switch off Dess.

What we expect : it will pull the usage from the battery, and all the non used solar energy goes into the battery. But it doesn’t. See attached picture. It’s as if it’s constantly performing the Dutch saldering itself?? Or should I use an other setting?

DESS does not do anything on phase-balancing, that is basic ESS-Functionality. (Which is why you still see that with DESS disabled)

You have set your system to: “Multiphase Balancing: Total of all phases”, which it does.
Yet, you are using no grid-meter, hence the values of the Multiplus reported to VRM are gross-metered, not net-metered.

That means, your VRM is logging “grid pull and feedin” at the same time, if your “total setpoint” is 0, but with async phaseload (i.e. -200/0/200 would be logged as 200 grid pull and 200 feedin concurrently).

So, based on how your energy provider charges you for the energy there are two options to sort that:

  • If you are billed per phase (gross-metered), you should set the inverters to do phase-individual set-point balancing.
  • If you are billed net-metered, you should purchase a compatible grid-meter capable of net-metering to have the VRM values reflecting the truth and not be gross-values of the multiplus. (the multiplus cannot do net-metering)

We are invoiced at the total of the phases.

The setpoint : can you explain me shortly what it does (besides giving me an option to directly pull or send to the net)? I saw some people having it always set to e.g 200W?

The setpoint is, where ESS tries to keep your grid at.

Some people prefer a negative one (-100W) to ensure there is rather feedin than grid pull.
Some prefer a slighlty positive one to extend battery runtime while keeping grid costs low.

Assuming a “0-Setpoint” for the following:
If you are charged total, then the ESS-Multiphase-Mode “Total of all phases” is the preferred one. It allows to achieve a Net-0 while keeping all units at an equal load and punish the grid for consumption imbalance. I.e. if you would have 1000W Consumption on L1 only, each unit will feedin (“to your house”) 333W, resulting in a grid figure of 666/-333/-333 which still is a net-0, so you pay nothing.

But for having this logged as “0 Feedin and 0 Grid-Pull” you would need to have a meter capable to do the net-metering as well. In Gross-Metering, this grid-figures would be logged as 666 grid-pull and 666 feedin at the same time. And if you let the figures be calculated by the Multiplus, this is what VRM would show you.

This leads - as your post implies - to the thinking that you are actually need to pay for something, because there is grid-pull logged - while in fact your ESS is Operating at a net-0, so you pay nothing for this at your energy provider.

So, to compare what VRM would log in the example above:

  • net metering: 0 grid2consumption, 0 bat2grid, 1000 bat2comsumption (“You visually pay nothing, as you are charged”)
  • gross metering / no meter: 666 grid2consumption, 666 bat2grid, 333 bat2consumption (this is what actually physically happens in either case, but doesn’t match your invoice-method)

I absolutely love the EM540, but there are other options as well. The VM-3P75CT allows to configure the registration method, net-metering is called “vectoring” there. If getting a bus-wire or ethernet cable to where the meter has to be installed is tricky, there are wireless solutions via zigbee bridges as well, but a hard-wiring is the most reliable solution, imho.

So, asking to your installer to either get “this or that” and he should be able to find all required manuals and installation guides to do it right. :slight_smile:

I rather not ask the installer, as it’s always "all works fine’. Plus, he is convinced the only right setting is Dess on with trading mode.

Yeah, but that meter is configured as pv inverter, not as grid meter? Thought that’s just an ac coupled pv you have?

If that’s your grid meter, then change its role to grid meter and the system will start to use it as such.

Allright so I did. But the dashboard got really odd, see pictures. My guess it’s installed at the wrong place, to function as meter?

I can’t tell. It should basically be the next thing behind your grid providers grid meter, maybe another breaker in between - but nothing else consuming or producing energy should be branching off before it.
