VRM no longer functioning - (Optus Australia users)

I am wondering if the problem is with the 2FA SMS, where the message service is un-reachable and then producing a timeout which then produces the “Unknown Error” when the user tries to log in.

Spoke with Tassie Tiger and got him to disable the 2FA and to check if that improves the situation.

I do not use 2FA and have the problem.

@shtonkalot I am guessing you have a standard router with either an inbuilt 4G mobile broadband device or one connected externally via USB port on your router ?

@guystewart maybe this is more to do with a “Keep Alive” telemetry signal that is a bit too long and so on some mobile networks it is being dropped ?

I guess I could try diverting my network through my phone via hotspot on Optus to see if I then start having issues.

I have a 4G modem router that takes a sim card.

Okay, so now we can confirm it definitely is a problem when connecting via a mobile broadband link on the Optus network.

Tassie Tiger has installed a SIM card from our other main telco and right away he has access to the VRM on his phone. Then when he uses the phone network via hotspot to his computer, again it works very well. Then when computer is back to Optus problems persist, not always but frequently.

This to me does sound like a Keep Alive issue, where Optus has a shorter Keep Alive than the other telco which will not be named

@guystewart The console log from dev tools from Tassie Tiger is full of errors and warnings, starting with:

Cross-Origin Request Blocked: The Same Origin Policy disallows reading the remote resource at https://js-agent.newrelic.com/nr-rum-1.252.0.min.js. (Reason: CORS request did not succeed).

Also:

None of the “sha512” hashes in the integrity attribute match the content of the subresource at “https://js-agent.newrelic.com/nr-rum-1.252.0.min.js”

Followed by:

New Relic: A problem occurred when starting up session manager. This page will not start or extend any session.

Thanks for confirming.

We don’t have a solution yet, but at least we are narrowing it down.

I can confirm that 2FA is not the issue.

Hi Guy, just updating you with the connection problems, the connection via Optus on mobile phone and laptop continues….. Telstra connection on both devices work perfectly.

Hi @TassieTiger
Is it possible you could organise a GX device connected to Optus for our engineers to probe?

Doesn’t need a system

Hi @guystewart ,

Did some tests today with Gordon (TassieTiger) to better understand where the issue are, and to me it does appear it could be a complex issue, more than one problem, but possibly where the main issue is with using the Optus network.

I asked Gordon to share his VRM site with me and for me, it loads fine (my connection is NBN), but the update is slow at around every 30 to 60 seconds. On the dashboard page, the “last Updated” indicator never shows as real time with the ‘~’, always as incrementing minutes, even though the data does get updated at this slow rate.

So, his system comprises several components, a Victron GX device and also a RPi running VenusOS, coupled to three SmartSolar MPPTs, with BVM712 and Smart RS 6000|48 inverter as part of his system.

The GX devices connect to the internet via a Mikrotik SXT 4G broadband mobile router system connecting to the Optus network.

He says what he notices is that typically the mornings are more likely to work, where he can log in to VRM and the connection holds for some period of time. Generally the afternoons are problematic with difficulties in logging in to the VRM or if logged in having a reliable update on the dashboard, regardless if he uses his computer connected via the SXT or via mobile hotspot or if he uses his mobile directly.

All other internet activity is fine for him, there is no data bandwidth issues or other noticeable problems with general web activities.

The Optus SIM does not have a public IP (so not able to use DDNS), so if you need a remote access ability (say SSH), let us know, I will try to help Gordon with something. You can PM either of us if there are specific setup requests you might need for the software gurus to have.

I checked with Gordon today to make sure his SXT router and computer were setup for correct time and DST, and they were, in case there was the possibility of timestamps being the cause of problems. All is correctly set for AEST DST, Hobart/Melbourne time.

So, I am still thinking this is pointing to some form of keep alive timeout, primarily on the GX device side, so the site to VRM link.

Your help is appreciated and am keenly interested to learn where the problem stems from - Paul

Hi Guy, VRM has been working flawlessly for the last two days  I can only assume that Optus has rectified something their end.

Nice, we can’t make any progress either for now, so have to just hold as is, hopefully working, until it either returns or stays fixed

Hi,
Is anyone who had this issue still regularly experiencing it?

Or has it resolved itself?

The problem is still there. Telstra works fine but Optus is still problematic

I’m glad I found this thread as I’ve been having what I can only describe as upstream gateway issues.

At home (aussieBB NBN) it’s fine.

At work it’s fine

Mobile data (spintel - Optus?) :

  • Always able to get to web logon page
  • Not always able to load the app.
  • Not always able to authenticate
  • Not always able to get MFA

If I get authenticated

  • The dashboard doesn’t load values
  • Unable to get alarms or settings etc
  • Sometimes just gets logged out.

I read there were db issues with performance being affected but data was primarily being recorded so I thought the problem was this, but it continues.

Recently it is though the web side is working better but a separate connection is being made to the db and that gets blocked.

I’m sure the issue is “my end" but equally would like to contribute troubleshooting and get assistance in finding what the issue is - are there ACLs on VE’s side blocking Optus or some funky assymetrical routing on either side etc.

On a side note: where would be best to suggest MFA options - I really want to have passkeys via my yubikey as I don’t always have access to my phone for SMS or TOTP or email.

Thanks
