Victron Quattro 12/3000/120 230v 50hz no longer charging

I have a Victron Quattro 12/3000/120 230v 50hz on a boat which has been installed for some time and working without issue. Recently, it has stopped charging the batteries when the generator is run. It does show 230v on UIMains but it simply won’t charge. This is an older unit with the version 19 or 19 microcontroller so I can’t run a VE.Bus to Bluetooth module to see the unit. I can plug into it and use the older Victron software to configure it (using MK3 USB adapter).

So far I’ve done these things:

  • verified 230v is getting to the unit
  • stripped the ends of the 230v input wires on the Quattro AC in (1st port) just in case of corrosion (boat is in saltwater) but this did not help
  • temporarily mounted a 120mm fan on the outside (to the lower fan grill) to give it some airflow

Some observations:

  • one in a rare while it will charge
  • I observed an overheat light lit up at one point – I suspect the fan in the unit may have failed
  • when I use the remote switch to toggle it between on (inverter)/off/charge only, I think the mains blue light blinks ~15 times when turned to charge and then nothing happens
  • inverter is working without issue
  • charging from the solar (Victron MPPT controllers) has been working without issue

Questions:

  • does this unit turn off charging if the fan fails – can it detect failed fans?
  • is there any way to get some kind of information out of it on WHY it is not charging? right now, the unit is on and the inverter light is on but that is it – no useful information from the LED lights
  • does anyone know what fan was installed in this generation of Quattros? 24v or 12v? it’s at the bottom and there appears to be only one

Lastly, I’d post the serial number but the sticker is inside behind some PCBs so I can’t get the full information.

Is it passing through the voltage or rejecting it entirely.

Are you sure the lack of charging is due to the Quattro or possibly due to the generator developing a fault.

Have you seen the generator FAQ, there are a couple of options to try.

The way my boat is wired makes it difficult to test pass through voltage (I can’t send the generator output to the Quattro without changing all the high voltage/230v outlets also to the generator output directly – the way it’s hooked up didn’t embrace the concept of the Quattro providing all the power most likely because the boat has some equipment that would exceed the power that our Quattro can provide). I’ll try testing it with a multimeter.

I have wondered if it was a generator problem. I did try adjusting the generator output voltage without any change in behavior. I also tried enabling “Weak AC” under the Charger tab along with “Dynamic current limiter” under General however no difference observed.

I’ll read the generator FAQ and see if I can figure out anything more. We do have other 230v loads (watermaker) that are all working without issue however they may be more accepting of some oddity in the generator output.
