Victron Orion XS cables

I am planning on installing the Orion XS DC to DC charger. Does anyone know what the maximum cable thickness with fit into the terminals of the Orion XS. For example, would 4 AWG fit?

Thanks, Ian

That is the largest that fits on the data sheet. You may need larger cables if the voltage drop is high.

OK, thanks for the quick replies! The data sheet for the Orion XS states that the largest cable size is 4 AWG.

Another question. Does the black earth connection need to be 4 AWG or can it be a thinner wire? Thanks.

And another! I am planning to connect the black ground cable directly to the vehicle body as an earth. Not exactly what the Orion installation data sheet shows. Any issue with this approach? Thanks.

The negative wire to the Orion XS provides a balancing current due to conversion losses or voltage differences. The main part of the 50A flows through the common battery to battery negative connection. The Orion XS negative wire still needs to have low voltage drop, a conservative view would be 15A, if you have say 50A at 12V in converting to 40A at 15V giving a 10A imbalance plus 5A for efficiency losses.

The Orion XS negative can be connected to the chassis as long as both batteries are connected to the chassis with low voltage drop cables and good clean connections.

Great feedback, thanks.
