Made the mistake of checking to see how hot my 30A orion was after a two hour drive yesterday.
So it sounds like its a known ‘issue’, and nothing to worry about.
But is there a way of seeing exactly how hot it is? Apparantly it modifies the current ehen it gets too hot. So surprised if it has a thermostat that you can’t see it in the Victron app. Is this possible?
If not, can anyone put my mind at rest that this thing will cut out before it sets fire to something? And what temp that cutout will be?
Thanks
The Orion instruction manual’s safety instructions state that it is normal for the Orion Smart DC-DC charger to become hot during operation; therefore, keep any heat-sensitive objects away. I am not aware of a way to see its operating temperature physically, or through the VictronConnect app.
The Orion does get pretty warm while charging, so installing properly can help mitigate the heat. You should ensure that you have it mounted vertically with proper space to allow cooling, as mentioned in the Installation guidelines, which also mentions that the maximum operating temperature is 90°C (194°F) under the cable and fusing section.
The Troubleshooting section does mention that the unit can throw an Error 26 - Terminal overheated code, and will auto-reset. Ive yet to have that code personally, but I assume that would protect you from a device operating too hot.
